Malibu Moon fillies impress in debuts at Delaware and Woodbine

August 5, 2017

A pair of fillies by Malibu Moon turned in outstanding performances in their debuts over the past weekend, both scoring open-length maiden special weight wins in dominating fashion.

Maya Malibu, 2, was a six-length winner at Delaware Park in a six-furlong main track affair. Several lengths off the lead early, she ranged up in hand on the turn and drew off in the stretch to win easily for her breeder/owner My Meadowview Farm and trainer Graham Motion (VIDEO).

Maya Malibu is out of Island Sand, who earned $1.2 million and won the Acorn S. (G1) and Delaware H. (G2).

Less than an hour later, the 3-year-old filly Fragrance won her unveiling at Woodbine, coming home a 4 ¾-length winner at six furlongs. Fragrance had the lead the entire trip, covering the distance in 1:10.61 (VIDEO).

Fragrance is owned by her breeders Anderson Farms Ont. Inc. and Rod Ferguson Farms Ltd. The dark bay filly’s dam Nadeshiko is a stakes winner and a sister to Grade 2 winners Battle Won and Imperative.

With a total of seven winners over the first weekend in August, Malibu Moon upped his total to 113 individuals this year, third-most of any active North American sire. A perennial top-10 sire, his progeny have earned nearly $6.3 million in 2017.
