Maximus Mischief colt stamps himself as a top-class sprinter with Lafayette S. win

Glengarry collected his third stakes win in just five lifetime starts with a front-running score in Friday’s $400,000 Lafayette S. at Keeneland.

The 3-year-old son of Maximus Mischief was making his first start of the year and was fully prepared to turn in a top-level effort. He got an extremely quick start and set a fast pace of :22.28 for the first quarter-mile, while maintaining a one-length lead. After a half-mile in a lively :44.98, Glengarry began to edge away from the field. After straightening for home, he continued to add to the margin, winning by 3 ½-lengths in 1:22.91 for the seven furlongs on a fast track.

“He’s done everything right leading up to this. He’ll train hard when you want him to,” trainer Doug Anderson said, referring to the colt’s victory following a four-month rest.

Glengarry’s only loss in five starts was when he was second in the Springboard Mile in December, his lone start around two turns. Friday’s victory upped his bankroll to $418,851 for the ownership team that includes his trainer, along with Aaron Kennedy and Toby Joseph.

The striking gray was purchased for $150,000 out of the 2023 Fasig-Tipton Midlantic 2-year-old sale and was bred by Highpoint Bloodstock.

Anderson indicated that Glengarry will be considered for the Pat Day Mile at Churchill Downs on Derby Day or the Chick Lang S. at Pimlico on Preakness Day.

Maximus Mischief is one of four Spendthrift stallions in the top five on the 2024 Second-Crop sire list. He finished 2023 ranked second on the First-Crop sire list, just behind Mitole and ahead of Vino Rosso and Omaha Beach. Glengarry is one of his sire’s three stakes winners and seven stakes horses.
