New Spendthrift stallions atop 2019 World Rankings

November 18, 2019

The Racing Post Rankings annual assessment of the world’s 20 best dirt perfomances was dominated by a trio horses who will begin their stud careers at Spendthrift Farm in 2020: Mitole, Omaha Beach and Vino Rosso.

The three were responsible for six of the 10 best performances in 2019, including a sweep of the top three spots.

Mitole’s brilliance was evident throughout the year, culminating with his victory in the Breeders’ Cup Sprint (G1), rated the best performance of the year. His Met Mile (G1) win was ranked third, while his Forego S. (G1) win was ranked eighth-best. Assured of being Champion Male Sprinter and a Horse of the Year candidate, Mitole will stand in 2020 for $25,000, stands and nurses.

Vino Rosso’s sterling victory in the Breeders’ Cup Classic (G1) was evaluated as the second-best race of 2019. The 4-year-old colt also won the Gold Cup (G1) at Santa Anita, was beaten just a nose in the Jockey Club Gold Cup (G1, the fifth-ranked race), and is also a possible Horse of the Year candidate. He will be standing next year for $30,000, stands and nurses.

Omaha Beach, also a dual Grade 1 winner this year, made the top 10 with his win in the Santa Anita Sprint Championship (G1), which was ranked ninth on the list. The 3-year-old also won the Arkansas Derby (G1) and was second in the Breeders’ Cup Dirt Mile (G1). Omaha Beach enters stud for a fee of $40,000, stands and nurses.
