Fortuna Mia a sharp first winner for Vekoma

Spendthrift Farm’s multiple Grade 1 winner Vekoma was represented by his first winner as a sire on May 13 at Horseshoe Indianapolis when his first starter Fortuna Mia scored a four-length victory in a 4 ½-furlong maiden special weight affair.

The 2-year-old filly, trained and owned by Rey Hernandez, broke smartly from post five and pressed Run Camila Run through a quarter-mile in :22.45. Turning for home, Fortuna Mia took over the lead, then pulled away with authority to win going away in :53.60 on a fast track.

Fortuna Mia was bred in Kentucky by Tyler B. Jones and is the first foal out of the Cairo Prince mare Windy Lane, who is a half-sister to Grade 2 winner Fioretti and stakes winner Louisville First.

Vekoma, who stands this year for $15,000, finished his career with three straight wins in the Sir Shackleton S., the Carter H. (G1) and the Metropolitan H. (G1) and earned $1,245,525. He also win the Nashua S. (G3) at two and the Blue Grass S. (G2) at three. In his first three seasons at stud, Vekoma bred an average of 210 mares
