Goldencents colt tops OBS January opener
January 30, 2019
A 3-year-old colt by Goldencents, last year’s leading Freshman Sire of winners, topped Tuesday’s opening session of the OBS Winter Mixed Sale with a final bid of $200,000 from Susan Montanye’s SBM Training and Sales.
“I think he’s a beautiful horse,” Montanye said. “I watched him at the breeze show and he did it right (a bullet 44 second half-mile). He seems to be the real deal.”
The bay colt was consigned by Bryan Rice of Woodside Ranch. He is out of multiple stakes placed Angels Trace.
“I thought he had a really good frame and I really liked the way he moved,” Rice said of the colt’s appeal as a yearling. “And I was pretty encouraged about the sire–a freshman sire at the time–so there were a handful of things, both physical and pedigree that caught my eye.”
Goldencents had a total of 29 winners in 2018, 10 more than any other First-Crop sire. He was second to only fellow Spendthrift stallion Cross Traffic by earnings, with nearly $1.4 million, and stakes horses, with six. Goldencents is standing this year at Spendthrift for $20,000.
