Sovereignty’s convincing victory in Saturday’s $7 million Breeders’ Cup Classic (G1) cemented the 4-year-old’s hold on the 2026 Older Male division. In winning the 1 ¼-mile race, Sovereignty defeated last year’s winner Forever Young, Golden Tempo and Napoleon Solo, winners of this year’s Triple Crown races, his brilliant stablemate Knightsbridge, and Grade 1 winner The Puma.

Sent off as the favorite, Sovereignty was masterfully ridden by Junior Alvarado. Knightsbridge set all the early fractions, with Sovereignty sitting in a very comfortable fifth while wide through the first six furlongs.

On the final turn, Sovereignty ranged up four-wide, passing horses without being asked, and was second turning into the stretch. He took the lead for good outside the furlong marker and was well clear the rest of the way, besting The Puma by 1 ¾-lengths on the wire.

The final time on the fast track was an excellent 2:00.36.

Owned and bred by Godolphin, Sovereignty is trained by Hall of Famer Bill Mott, who modestly said, “I’ve had a couple good ones (including Cigar), but you could almost say he’s a once-in-a-lifetime horse,” Mott said. “He’s a magnificent horse.”

“The job Bill and his team have done to get this horse from last year to today in the shape that he’s in is an unbelievable trainer performance,” said Godolphin’s Michael Banahan. “You’ll see some words written, but to put those into operation and all those little things that have happened along the way and the patience that Bill has shown to get him there to do that is unbelievable.

Sovereignty is now a five-time Grade 1 winner of $10,516,550 and is 8-3-1 in 13 starts.

Sovereignty 11th Breeders’ Cup winner for Into Mischief, who got his 10th on Friday when the undefeated Hughes took the Juvenile (G1). No other sire has more than nine Breeders’ Cup winners. Sovereignty is Into Mischief’s second Classic winner, coming six years after current Spendthrift stallion Authentic in 2020.

With Sovereignty’s huge payday, Into Mischief is poised to take the top spot on this year’s General Sire list. His is currently the reigning seven-time champion sire.
