Local Knowledge tops Yaupon exacta in Amsterdam S. (G2)

Local Knowledge and Solitude Dude battled the length of the Saratoga stretch in Friday’s $250,000 Amsterdam S. (G2), with Local Knowledge getting the win by a short head to give the 3-year-old son of Yaupon his first stakes win in what was the just his third lifetime start.

American Man was quickest out of the gate and blazed through a quarter-mile in :21.77, with Local Knowledge and Solitude Dude sitting just behind him. The field began to bunch up on the turn, and at the top of the stretch the trio were side-by-side. American Man began to weaken from his early efforts, leaving Local Knowledge and Solitude Dude to determine the outcome. Both colts were very game, but Local Knowledge, under John Velazquez, was just a bit better as he finished the 6 ½-furlongs in 1:14.89 on a good main track.

“He was game,” said Velazquez, who has now won a remarkable 800 graded stakes in his career. “I didn’t expect to be that close to the lead, but I inherited it where I was. I took the horse inside, the horse outside (Solitude Dude) tried to go and keep up with them. I just bided my time. I asked him and I’m very proud that he did [go on]. He felt that horse the whole way down the stretch. For a horse that has only run three times, to do what he did today was very special.”

Owned by Spendthrift Farm, Local Knowledge is 2-0-1 in three starts and has earned $214,133. The bay colt was bred in Kentucky by Stoneriggs Farm and sold for $625,000 at the 2025 OBS Spring 2-year-old sale.
