Malibu Moon juvenile takes Grey S. (G3) at Woodbine

October 9, 2011

Spendthrift-bred Prospective rolled to a two-length victory in the $201,200 Grey S. (G3) at Woodbine on Oct. 9 to give his sire Malibu Moon his second stakes winner on the day.

Two-year-old Prospective, who broke his maiden six weeks ago at Woodbine was making his stakes debut and trying the 1 1/16-mile distance for the first time. Trainer Mark Casse and John Oxley made the colt a supplemental nominee to the Grey earlier in the week.

The connections were rewarded with a fortunate trip and outstanding effort from the dark bay juvenile. Stalking a couple of lengths off the pace for the first half-mile, he was forced to go six wide to make his run for the lead. After striking the front about five-sixteenths from the wire, he locked in a duel with favored Excaper before putting that one away late. The final time for the 8 1/2-furlongs was 1:44.55

“I wasn’t really sure how good he was, but his last couple of works were really good, so we decided to supplement him,” said Casse. “His pedigree is two turns, up and down, and Malibu Moon is one of my favorite sires.”

The $120,000 payday upped Prospective’s career take to $161,317. The Kentucky bred is 1-1-0 in three starts. He is the first foal out of Spirited Away, winner of the 2008 Truly Bound H. at Fair Grounds.
