Patch Adams’ victory in Saturday’s $500,000 Woody Stephens S. (G1) was the first stakes win for the 3-year-old Into Mischief colt and was what would become the first of two Grade 1 winners on the day for his sire; later on the card Sovereignty would go on to win the Belmont S. (G1).

Patch Adams is the 25th Grade 1 winner and 175th graded winner in Into Mischief’s illustrious career.

Facing a top-class field that included Madaket Road, Citizen Bull and Macho Music, Patch Adams overcame a three-wide trip the entire way to win the seven-furlong contest by 2 ¼-lengths over Madaket Road. Always within striking distance of pacesetter Macho Music, Patch Adams rolled into the stretch to collar Madaket Road and Macho Music. Neither could withstand the onslaught as Patch Adams moved away easily in deep stretch to finish in 1:21.36 over a muddy track.

“I know he was going to come out of there running and he did,” winning rider Luis Saez said. “He found a good spot and, man, when he came to the top of the stretch he gave me a pretty good turn of foot.”

Patch Adams, owned by CHC, Inc. and WinStar Farm LLC (the latter also his breeder), is 3-0-1 in six starts and has earned $497,585. Patch Adams’ stakes-winning dam Well Humored is a half-sister to Parchment Party, winner of the Belmont Gold Cup (G3) Friday at Saratoga.
