Provenance, Monomoy Girl’s first foal, becomes Into Mischief’s 55th TDN ‘Rising Star’

Spendthrift Farm homebred Provenance is showing the early promise of his incredible pedigree, as the 2-year-old colt – by Into Mischief and out of champion Monomoy Girl – broke his maiden impressively at Santa Anita on Sept. 27th to be named as the newest ‘Rising Star’ by the Thoroughbred Daily News.
Trained by Bob Baffert, Provenance delivered as the heavy favorite in both the wagering and in racing fans’ hearts, showing solid early speed and remaining clear while proving best in the stretch. He hit the wire 1 3/4 lengths in front under jockey Juan Hernandez, while never facing a serious challenge in the six-furlong maiden special weight contest on dirt.
The first foal out of champion and superstar racemare Monomoy Girl, Provenance was making his second start after finishing a good third in his one-mile debut, when he broke slowly and was forced to make a wide early bid to get into contention behind a front-running winner. On Saturday, the talented colt showed progress with much better early speed, despite the turnback in distance.
Proudly bred and raised at the Lexington-based farm, Provenance importantly gives the great Monomoy Girl her first winner in the form of a TDN Rising Star. He also marks the 55th TDN Rising Star sired by the six-time reigning champion General Sire, Into Mischief.
