In what was termed a “prep” by trainer Bill Mott for next month’s Travers S. (G1), Sovereignty turned in another winning performance in Saturday’s $500,000 Jim Dandy S. (G2) at Saratoga in his first start since winning the June 7th Belmont S. (G1).

With his victory, the 3-year-old Into Mischief colt topped the $5 million mark in career earnings.

The 1 1/8-mile Jim Dandy had just a field of five, including Baeza, who finished third in both the Kentucky Derby (G1) and Belmont. Mo Plex was intent on getting the top spot early and led the field through a half-mile in :48.49, with Sovereignty about a length back on the outside. Going into the final bend, Sovereignty very briefly dropped back to last before launching a three-wide bid.

Baeza had taken the lead on the turn, but Sovereignty had his measure and took the lead turning for home. Despite Baeza’s best effort, Sovereignty proved invincible, winning by a length in 1:49.52 on a fast track.

Sovereignty, owned and bred by Godolphin, is now 5-2-0 in eight starts and has earned $5,147,800. He is now Into Mischief’s third-leading all time earner, behind Dubai World Cup (G1) winner Laurel River and 2020 Horse of the Year Authentic, who stands at Spendthrift alongside his sire.
