Sugaree the first winner for Freshman sire By My Standards

July 12, 2025

Sugaree rallied strongly in the stretch to become the first winner for Spendthrift Farm’s By My Standards on July 12 at Monmouth Park in a 5 ½-furlong maiden race for 2-year-old fillies [WATCH RACE].

Away in midpack in the field of eight, Sugaree was in the three path going into the turn. She stayed well off the fence around the bend and came into the stretch with about six lengths to make up. Showing great determination down the stretch, she had to slightly alter course to avoid erratic-running foe, then struck the front inside the final sixteenth to win by three-quarters of a length.

Sugaree is owned by David A. Bernsen LLC, Dean Demaree and Steve Crabtree and was bred in Kentucky by Mullikin Thoroughbreds. Sugaree’s dam Fly in for the Win has produced three winners from four starters and comes from the family of Cigar Mile (G1) winner Purge and multiple graded stakes winner Valid Wager.

By My Standards, a son of Into Mischief, is one of the top lifetime earners by his sire. Winner of the Louisiana Derby (G2) at three, he would go on to have his best year at age four, winning the Oaklawn H. (G2), Alysheba S. (G2) and New Orleans Classic (G2). He retired to Spendthrift with career earnings of $2,294,430.
