Vino Rosso colt goes from last to first to win Mine That Bird Derby
April 6, 2026
Avery Place made his stakes debut a winning one on Easter Sunday at Sunland Park with a last-to-first victory in the $175,000 Mine That Bird Derby.
The chestnut colt is the third black type winner of the year for Vino Rosso, tying him with Omaha Beach for the most on the Fourth-Crop Sire list.
Coming into Sunday’s 1 1/8-mile race off a 6 ½-furlong maiden special weight win on Feb. 27, Avery Place was four wide and last of eight around the first turn. He continued wide on the track and was still near the back of the field after six furlongs. With five-sixteenths to go, he kicked into gear and passed horses quickly to get within two lengths of the lead at the top of the stretch. Avery Place had nothing but clear running in the stretch and surged to the lead in the final furlong and drew away to win by 1 ¾-lengths.
A winner of two of three lifetime starts, Avery Place has earned $133,350 for owners Judge Lanier Racing, LLC and H.P. Drought & Company. The winner was bred in Kentucky by Lothenbach Stables Inc.
