Regally-bred Malibu Moon colt scores Gulfstream MdSpWt win

March 4, 2017

Eastport overcame a slow early pace to break his maiden by a length Saturday at Gulfstream Park in the second lifetime start for the 3-year-old Malibu Moon colt.

Owned by his breeder R. S. Evans, Eastpoint is out of the Pleasant Colony mare Resort, making him a half-brother to Peter Pan S. (G2) winner Sightseeing and Grade 1-placed Sea Island. Resort was runner-up in the Coaching Club American Oaks (G1).

Eastport was several lengths off the pace after six furlongs in 1:13.80, but found his best stride on the inside coming into the stretch and collared early leader Blind Ambition in mid-stretch then held off Donwell late to secure the win.

With 37 winners to date, Malibu Moon is tied for the top spot on the 2017 General Sire list. One of the leading sires of Kentucky Derby runners in the past decade, Malibu Moon has another Derby hopeful this year in Gormley, and also a top Kentucky Oaks (G1) prospect in Grade 2 winner Farrell.
