Spendthrift colt scores decisively in debut at Fair Grounds

February 16, 2019

Get the Prize made his debut in stylish fashion on Feb. 16 at Fair Grounds, drawing off in the stretch to tally a 2 3/4-length victory in a sharp 1:09.85 for the six furlongs [WATCH RACE]. The performance returned a gaudy 87 Beyer.

Trained by Al Stall, Jr., the 3-year-old son of Candy Ride (Arg) is co-owned by Spendthrift Farm LLC with Town and Country Racing, LLC.

Get the Prize and New Frontier tussled for the lead in the first furlong, but Get the Prize soon asserted himself and had a one-length lead after a half-mile in :45.73. Miguel Mena gave the bay colt a nudge in mid-stretch, and he drew off to win easily.

The winner was a $410,000 purchase at the OBS March 2-year-old sale last year. Bred by Diamond A Racing, Get the Prize is out of Hondo’s Way, a half-sister to Cotillion S. (G2) winner Nothing But Fun.
