Alan Porter’s 2020 Breeding Analysis for Bolt d’Oro

A brilliant multiple grade one-winning two-year-old, Bolt d’Oro is by Medaglia d’Oro out of a multiple stakes-producing A.P. Indy mare.

Medaglia d’Oro has enjoyed tremendous success when crossed with Mr. Prospector line mares. On this cross, Medaglia d’Oro’s magnificent daughters, Rachel Alexandra and Songbird, are out of Forty Niner line mares, and there are also two Medaglia d’Oro grade one winners out of mares from that horse’s son, Distorted Humor (sire of multiple stakes winner Sonic Mule out of the dam of Bolt d’Oro, and available through Any Given Saturday, who gives a very interesting pedigree pattern, as well as Sharp Humor, Drosselmeyer, Flower Alley, Jimmy Creed and Maclean’s Music). From other branches of Mr. Prospector, there are Medaglia d’Oro line grade one winners out of mares by Machiavellian (sire of Street Cry; grandsire of Street Sense), Gone West (who is sire of Elusive Quality – the broodmare sire of a Medaglia d’Oro line stakes winner – Mr. Greeley, Grand Slam and Speightstown, and grandson of Quality Road), Thunder Gulch (sire of Point Given, also broodmare sire of a Medaglia d’Oro line graded stakes winner), Lemon Drop Kid and Seeking the Gold.

From other Mr. Prospector line mares, there are also Medaglia d’Oro line graded winners from daughters of Smart Strike (sire of a graded stakes winning half-brother to Bolt d’Oro, and represented by Curlin, English Channel and Lookin At Lucky), Jade Hunter and Smoke Glacken, and stakes winners from daughters of City Zip (by Carson City, sire of Pollard’s Vision, Cuvee and Five Star Day) Marquetry, Woodman and Trippi, and from the Fappiano branch, daughters of Empire Maker (sire of Pioneerof the Nile and Bodemeister), Victory Gallop and Unbridled’s Song (sire of Cross Traffic, Dunkirk, Eurosilver, Even the Score, First Defence, Half Ours, Midshipman, Old Fashioned, Rockport Harbor, Songandaprayer and Zensational).

Bolt d’Oro is out of a mare by A.P. Indy, a son of Seattle Slew, and he should work well under other branches of Seattle Slew. Those that have provided the dams of Medaglia d’Oro stakes winners include Vindication, Capote (sire of Boston Harbor), Avenue of Flags, Williamstown, Fast Play and Doneraile Court. It also might be feasible to consider mares by A.P. Indy grandsons such as Tapit (sire of Tapizar and Trappe Shot), Sky Mesa, Dialed In, Algorithms (sire of a stakes winner from this family), Discreetly Mine, Stay Thirsty and To Honor and Serve.

Medaglia d’Oro has a grade one and a grade two winner out of mares by Kris S. (sire of Arch) and a stakes winner out of a mare by his son Rock Hard Ten, and a stakes winner out of a mare by Dynaformer, all from the Roberto branch of Hail to Reason. From the Halo branch of Hail to Reason, Medaglia d’Oro has a graded stakes winners out of a mare by Devil His Due (by Devil’s Bag, a brother to Saint Ballado), and from the Stop the Music branch, he has a stakes winner out of a mare by Cure the Blues, also sire of the second dam of Rachel Alexandra.

From his own Northern Dancer line, Medaglia d’Oro has enjoyed success with the Danzig branch, with a champion from a Danehill mare, and several other major winners out of mares by sons of that horse; a grade one winner from a Belong to Me mare, and a graded winner out of a Pine Bluff mare. We might also consider daughters of War Front (sire of two stakes winners from Bolt d’Oro’s family), Hard Spun, Exchange Rate and War Chant (broodmare sire of a Medaglia d’Oro graded winner). Medaglia d’Oro is a Sadler’s Wells line horse, and he has a grade one winner out of a mare by Ashkalani, from the male line of Nureyev, a three-quarters brother to Sadler’s Wells, and there is also a stakes winner out of a mare by Nureyev son Theatrical.

Out of mares descending from Icecapade – a three-quarters relative to Northern Dancer – Medaglia d’Oro has graded winner Rydilluc out of a mare by Clever Trick, and from the Wild Again branch has stakes winners out of mares by Wild Rush and Vicar.

There has also been success form Medaglia d’Oro with Blushing Groom line mares, including via Rahy and Runaway Groom.
