Alan Porter’s 2020 Breeding Analysis for Cross Traffic

Cross Traffic was a brilliant grade one-winning miler by Unbridled’s Song out grade one-winning sprinter Stop Traffic. He made a stellar start to his stud career as Leading Freshman Sire, with a first crop that included Champion Two-Year-Old Filly Jaywalk.

Jaywalk is out of a mare by Orientate, who sire Mt. Livermore has worked well under Unbridled’s Song and his sire, Unbridled, and who is also sire of Orientate, Peaks and Valleys and Lucky Lionel (broodmare sire of Cross Traffic stakes winner Dame Plata). Mt. Livermore is by Blushing Groom, and Unbridled and Unbridled’s Song have also worked over Blushing Groom through Rahy and through Runaway Groom and his son, Cherokee Run (sire of Kafwain and Yonaguska).

Given that he is a grandson of Fappiano, the success of Unbridled’s Song and his sons with mares carrying In Reality (giving a double of the influential sire, Rough’ n Tumble, who is duplicated in Cross Traffic through Dr. Fager) was no surprise. From this line, Cross Traffic has stakes winner Capocostello out of a mare by Successful Appeal. That horse is by Valid Appeal, and Unbridled’s Song has grade one winners out of mares by Valid Appeal (also sire of Valid Expectations and Valid Wager) and Taylor’s Falls; a graded stakes winner out of a mare by In Reality himself; a graded stakes winner out a mare by Known Fact, and two stakes winners out of mares descending from In Reality through Relaunch (who can be found through Tiznow – already broodmare sire of an Unbridled’s Song line graded stakes winner – Honour and Glory, Skywalker, Bertrando, Officer and Cee’s Tizzy), and there is a grade one winner by a son of Unbridled’s Song out of a mare by In Reality son Kyle’s Our Man. Unbridled’s Song’s grade one winner, Political Force is out of a mare, by Glitterman, and is inbred to In Reality, once through a sister to Relaunch.

There is a trio of grade one winners from the Unbridled’s Song line out of mares by Deputy Minister and Cross Traffic has stakes winner Pat’s No Fool out of a mare by Touch Gold, a son of Deputy Minister. From other branches of Deputy Minister, this sire line has stakes winners from daughters of Awesome Again (sire of Ghostzapper), Touch Gold, Dehere and his brother Defrere, Salt Lake, French Deputy, Silver Deputy (sire of Posse, Spring At Last and Badge of Silver), Service Stripe, Forest Camp and Deputy Commander.

Deputy Minister is a Northern Dancer line stallion and one of the most prolific crosses for Unbridled’s Song and his sons has been with mares from the Storm Cat branch of Northern Dancer, which has provided more than 50 stakes winners. In addition to Storm Cat himself, Unbridled’s Song and his sons have sired stakes winners out of mares by Tale of the Cat (and his son Lion Heart), Forestry, Forest Wildcat (sire of Wildcat Heir), Tabasco Cat, Hennessy (sire of Johannesburg and Cactus Ridge – both broodmare sires of Unbridled’s Song stakes winners – and Henny Hughes; grandsire of Scat Daddy), Catienus, Menifee (by Harlan, also the sire of Harlan’s Holiday), Giant’s Causeway (a brother to Freud, and sire of First Samurai), Stormy Atlantic and Storm Creek. The Storm Cat strain might also be brought in through Stormin Fever, Bernstein, Pure Prize, Storm Boot, Yankee Gentleman and Sea of Secrets. Unbridled’s Song also has a grade one winner out of a mare by Summer Squall (a Storm Bird son bred on the same cross as Storm Cat), and a grade one winner out of a mare by Storm Bird son, Ocean Storm.

From the Danzig branch of Northern Dancer, Chief’s Crown (sire of Concerto; grandsire of Bellamy Road), Polish Numbers, Belong to Me, Langfuhr, Boundary (sire of Big Brown) and Pine Bluff all appear as broodmare sires of Unbridled’s Song line stakes winners, which suggests also trying daughters of young Danzig line stallions War Front (who is particularly appealing here), Exchange Rate and Hard Spun. From the Dixieland Band line there are stakes winners out of mares Citidancer and his son Disco Rico, and Dixieland Band is also sire of Dixie Union, Dixie Brass and Chimes Band. There are also Unbridled’s Song line stakes winners out of mares descending from Northern Dancer in male line via Sadler’s Wells (sire of El Prado, and grandsire of Medaglia d’Oro – himself sire of a stakes winning half-brother to Stop Traffic – Kitten’s Joy and Artie Schiller), Lyphard and Nijinsky II (who can be brought in through Royal Academy, Shadeed, Alydeed, Seattle Dancer, Sky Classic and Strawberry Road). Unbridled’s Song and sons have also enjoyed considerable success with several other branches of Northern Dancer. From the Icecapade branch of the Nearctic (sire of Northern Dancer) line, Unbridled’s Song is sire of the brilliant Zensational out of a mare by Phone Trick (by Clever Trick), a horse who is also broodmare sire of a grade one winner by Unbridled’s Song’s sire, Unbridled.

Unbridled enjoyed a strong affinity with mares by Caro, Unbridled’s Song being an example of that cross. In turn, Unbridled’s Song has a grade one winner out of a mare by Dr. Carter (a son of Caro) and a graded stakes winner out of a mare by Siberian Express (by a son of Caro), and his son, Songandaprayer, sired a graded stakes winner out of a mare by Caro son With Approval. Other good sources of Caro would be Cozzene (sire of Mizzen Mast and Alphabet Soup), In Excess and his son Indian Charlie (sire of a stakes winning half-sister to Cross Traffic), and Tejano (broodmare sire of a stakes winner by a son of Unbridled’s Song). Caro is a Nasrullah line stallion, and from the Naskra branch of that line, Unbridled’s Song has an excellent strike rate with mares by Olympio.

A great-grandson of Mr. Prospector (by Raise a Native), Unbridled’s Song has enjoyed success when bred back over mares from a wide variety of branches of the Raise a Native line. These include grade one winners Songandaprayer (out of a mare by Premiership, a son of Exclusive Native, and a stakes winner out of a mare by another son of that horse, Affirmed), Marylebone (out of a mare by Wavering Monarch – the sire of Maria’s Mon – from the Majestic Prince line), and a stakes winner out of a mare by Alydar.

Unbridled’s Song and his sons have also begun to find success when bred back over mares from their own Mr. Prospector sire line. Cross Traffic has stakes winner Dancin Shoes out of mare by Gone West, and Unbridled’s Song and sons have also found success over Gone West through Mr. Greeley – broodmare sire of an Unbridled’s Song line grade one winner – and his son El Corredor, West By West, Smarty Jones (by Elusive Quality), Came Home and Proud Citizen with other sources including Grand Slam and Speightstown. Other branches of Mr. Prospector that have produced Unbridled’s Song line stakes winners include Forty Niner through Distorted Humor (the broodmare sire of Unbridled’s Song’s world-champion, Arrogate, and who can be found through Flower Alley, Any Given Saturday and Sharp Humor), Trippi (broodmare sire of an Unbridled’s Song grade one winner), Tactical Advantage, Luhuk and Gold Case; Lemon Drop Kid (broodmare sire of two Unbridled’s Song grade one winners); Smart Strike (broodmare sire of a grade one winner by a son of Unbridled’s Song); Machiavellian (sire of Street Cry and grandsire of Street Sense); Miswaki (sire of Black Tie Affair and grandsire of Formal Gold); Seeking the Gold (including a stakes winner out of a mare by Mutakddim, and also available through Petionville and Cape Town); and Fusaichi Pegasus.

From the Hail to Reason line, the strain of Halo, strongly appeals here and has already appeared in the broodmare sire line of Unbridled’s Song line stakes winners via his sons Southern Halo (sire of More Than Ready) and Devil’s Bag (sire of Devil His Due, Diablo and Abaginone), himself a brother to Saint Ballado, the sire of Saint Liam, Captain Bodgit, Sweetsouthernsaint and Yankee Victor). Another Hail to Reason source, Roberto has enjoyed success through Red Ransom, Dynaformer, Lear Fan and Kris S.

Unbridled’s Song sired a grade one winner out of a mare by Seattle Slew, and from mares by Seattle Slew sons Avenue of Flags and A.P. Indy, a Champion Two-Year-Old, and a classic performer, who was subsequently Leading Freshman Sire. Unbridled’s Song and his sons also have stakes winners out of mares descending from Seattle Slew through Boston Harbor and his sire Capote, Vindication and Chief Seattle. From the A.P. Indy branch there are two stakes winners by his sons out mares by A.P. Indy son Pulpit (indicating that Mineshaft, Malibu Moon, Congrats and Flatter – all bred on the same cross as Pulpit might work. Sky Mesa and Tapit – already broodmare sire of a Cross Traffic stakes winner – are sons of Pulpit, that could also be considered. Mares by Bernardini and sons might also be interesting.
