Strike the Moon rises late for 2nd stakes victory

October 19, 2013

Strike the Moon used all of the Charles Town stretch to get up by a nose in the $50,000 Municipalities Mayors H. on Friday evening, giving the daughter of Malibu Moon her second stakes win and pushing her past the $650,000 career earnings mark (VIDEO).

Strike the Moon is the 11th stakes winner of 2013 by her sire, led by Kentucky Derby (G1) winner Orb. Malibu Moon is currently fourth on this year’s General Sire list, with $8.77 million in progeny purse earnings.

At the outset of Friday’s seven furlong contest, Strike the Moon settled near the rear of the eight horse field, then began to move closer on the turn while well off the fence. The 5-year-old continued to cut into the lead as the wire neared, ultimately prevailing in the final jump.

Strike the Moon, a Larry Johnson homebred who won the Charles Town Oaks two years ago, has now racked up $658,354 in her 28 starts.
