Temple City 2YO rolls in $300K Spendthrift Juvenile

Dunph powered to his second blowout win in as many starts on Sunday with a 7 3/4-length in the $300,000 Spendthrift Juvenile Stallion S. at Churchill Downs (VIDEO).

The 2-year-old son of Temple City turned in a near repeat performance of his maiden score on Sept. 15, when he bounded to an eight-length score at Penn National.

Dunph was away well and was second to the outside of the early pacesetter B. B. Dude, who went through the first quarter-mile in :22.68. Dunph cut into the two-length margin entering the turn, and took the lead outside the quarter pole. Given his cue at the top of the lane, he drew away from the field to finish the seven furlongs in 1:23.20 on a fast main track.

“The horse broke really sharp and I got into the spot I wanted,” winning rider Tyler Gaffalione said. When I turned for home I still had a ton of horse left. I think he’ll just keep getting better as the distances get longer.”

Dunph was bred in Kentucky by Equus Farm, and is owned by Three Diamonds Farm and Jose Besecker. He has now earned $105,540.

The Spendthrift Juvenile Stallion S. is exclusively for 2-year-old offspring sired by any active or non-active Spendthrift stallion that stood in 2015, including all Spendthrift-owned stallions standing regionally in North America. The $300,000 purse was structured with a unique approach to award $150,000 to the breeders of the top four placed horses, with the remaining $150,000 allocated to the owners.
