Temple City colt game in Grey S. (G3) victory

October 1, 2017

Archaggelos split horses in upper stretch en route to a 2 1/4-length victory in the $125,000 Grey S. (G3) at Woodbine. The 2-year-old Temple City colt was making his stakes and Polytrack debut after breaking his maiden on the Laurel Park turf course just a week ago.

Archaggelos is Temple City’s 11th stakes horse this year. The Spendthrift stallion has more than $10 million in lifetime progeny earnings and ranks in the top 10 on the Fourth-Crop Cumulative Sire list.

The 1 1/16-mile Grey drew a field of seven juveniles. Archaggelos sat in fifth until the top of the stretch, when Rafael Hernandez guided him between horses and to the lead. Archaggelos burst clear in the final furlong to stop the timer in 1:44.56.

“We saved ground all the way and I didn’t want to go too wide so we just waited for a hole to open,” said Hernandez. “That happened and he went between horses like nothing, he was brave.”

Archaggelos is owned by his breeder Monticule. The bay colt is out of Mien, making him a half-brother to Kentucky Derby (G1) and Preakness (G1) winner Big Brown. With the win, Archaggelos is now 2-1-0 and has banked $89,742.
