Tommy Jo turns for home in the Spinaway S. (G1) – Dom Napolitano/NYRA

Spendthrift Farm bred Tommy Jo absolutely romped in the Grade 1 Spinaway Stakes to open up Labor Day weekend and the final few days of the historic Saratoga meet.

Tommy Jo dazzled in her debut at Saratoga back in July earning herself TDN Rising Star honors, the 53rd for her sire Into Mischief.

She was set to face a tough field of some of the best juvenile fillies in the historic $300,000 Grade 1 Spinaway Stakes going 7 furlongs on the main track. Breaking well under jockey Kendrick Carmouche, Tommy Jo settled behind the pace setters. Around the turn, she made her move and never looked back, cruising to an impressive finish 6 1/2 lengths in front of the second place horse.

A homebred for Spendthrift Farm, Tommy Jo is out of the stakes winning Pioneerof The Nile mare Mother Mother and is by the legendary Spendthrift sire Into Mischief. Spendthrift Farm owner Eric Gustavson was present for the win, “We had high expectations based off her maiden win. We are just so thankful. We’d like to give all glory to God first. She didn’t disappoint, we are so excited about her. She ran great and is a homebred, which is extra exciting for us, that she was raised on the farm and every division on the farm had a hand in getting her here. It was a big team win and we preach a ‘we, not me’ mentality at the farm first, so that’s a big deal for us. And she is named after our only granddaughter as well, so that is like the cherry on top of it all. Her name is Tommy Jo Gustavson.”
