Tricky Temper the 140th stakes winner for Into Mischief

November 19, 2023

Tricky Temper became another milestone stakes winner for Into Mischief with her victory in Saturday’s $100,000 Key Cents S. at Aqueduct. The 2-year-old filly is the 140th lifetime stakes winner for her sire, as well as his 26th stakes winner this year.

Into Mischief currently tops the 2023 General Sire list with $24.2 million in progeny earnings, more than $6 million ahead of his closest pursuer.

Tricky Temper, trained by Jeremiah Englehart for Mark Stanley, was away well in the six-furlong contest, tracking Cara’s Time through a half-mile in :46.78. The pacesetter had a two-length lead turning for home, and it wasn’t until the final sixteenth that Tricky Time surged past, winning by a neck in 1:11.74 on a fast track.

“She broke well and put me in a beautiful spot,” said winning rider Irad Ortiz, Jr. “I just bided my time. The horse in front of me [Cara’s Time] is a nice filly, so I just used her like a target and got there on time. Jeremiah did a great job with her. He was very positive and told me she was doing really well and to ride her with confidence.”

Tricky Temper, who was second in Aqueduct’s Matron S. in early October, is now 2-1-0 in five starts, with earnings of $146,210.

Stanley purchased the bay filly for $230,000 at this year’s OBS Spring Sale of 2-year-olds in training. She was bred by Sequel Thoroughbreds, LLC and Lakland Farm.
