Vicar’s in Trouble dominates in Louisiana Derby (G2)

Racing’s newest millionaire is Into Mischief’s Vicar’s in Trouble following the colt’s dominating 7 ¼-length victory in the $400,000 Super Derby (G2) Saturday at Louisiana Downs.

The 3-year-old colt, bred by Spendthrift Farm, has now earned $1,128,900, with previous stakes wins in the Louisiana Derby (G2) and the LeComte S. (G3), both at Fair Grounds. He joins $2.4 million earner Goldencents as Into Mischief’s seven-figure horses.

Into Mischief ranks in the top five on the Third Crop Sire list with over $3 million in progeny earnings. His six stakes winners have accumulated nine black-type victories in 2014.

After stalking very close to the pace for six furlongs, Vicar’s in Trouble asserted himself at the head of the lane, quickly drawing away from the field to win with authority. The final time for the 1 1/8-mile test was 1:50.38 over a fast track.

“Visually it was one of his best races,” said Mike Maker, who trains Vicar’s in Trouble for Ken and Sarah Ramsey. “It reminded me a lot of his Louisiana Derby.”

Maker said the Grade 2, $500,000 Indiana Derby is Oct. 4, at Indiana Grand is still in the plan for his colt’s next start.

The Ramseys purchased the winner for $80,000 at the Fasig-Tipton Midlantic 2-year-olds in training sale from Pike Racing, agent. Vicar’s in Trouble is out of Vibrant, a sister to Fall Highweight (G3) winner True Direction.
