Alan Porter’s 2026 Breeding Analysis for Authentic

Kentucky Derby winner, Breeders’ Cup Classic winner, Champion Three-Year-Old and Horse of the Year Authentic and the outstanding son of seven-time Champion Sire and Champion Sire of Two-Year-Olds, Into Mischief. A Leading Second Crop Sire, he is also a grade one sire in 2025.

Into Mischief has sired 13 stakes winners, including grade one winners Life is Good, Practical Joke, Citizen Bull, Patch Adams, and Tappan Street out of mares by Distorted Humor. Authentic is sire of 2025 Frizette Stakes (G1) winner Iron Orchard out of a mare by Distorted Humor son, Brethren, and other sons of Distorted Humor are Flower Alley, himself broodmare sire of an Into Mischief graded stakes winner; Any Given Saturday, broodmare sire of an Into Mischief stakes winner;  Drosselmeyer, Maclean’s Music, Jimmy Creed, Alternation, Brethren and Khozan. He also has multiple grade one winner Goldencents out of a mare by Banker’s Gold. Distorted Humor and Banker’s Gold are both sons of Forty Niner, a stallion who could also be introduced through mares by Sunday Break (dam of Authentic stakes winner Reagan’s Wit), Coronado’s Quest, Roar (broodmare sire of an Into Mischief stakes winner), Trippi (broodmare sire of an Into Mischief graded winner) and Twining.

Out of a mare by Mr. Greeley, Authentic is a product of the very successful cross of Into Mischief over mares from the Gone Westbranch of Mr. Prospector. Since Gone West will be in the fourth generation of Authentic’s foals, it could worth crossing Authentic back over mares from that line. Speightstown is a reverse Gone West/Storm Cat cross to Authentic, and for Into Mischief he has provided the dams of grade one winners Mia Mischief and Mischievous Alex. Speightstown is also sire of Munnings and Central Banker (also broodmare sire of an Into Mischief stakes winner). Into Mischief and sons have four stakes winners out of mares by Elusive Quality, as well as a graded winner out of a mare by his son, Quality Road, and two stakes winner from mares by another son Smarty Jones. From a mare by Gone West son, Grand Slam, Into Mischief sired graded winner Strict Compliance, and he has graded winner Sombeyay out of a mare by Grand Slam son, Limehouse. There are also Into Mischief stakes winners out of mares by Gone West sons Proud Citizen and Muatarib.

Into Mischief has crossed well with mares from the Fappiano line particularly through Unbridled, who appears as broodmare sire of his brilliant daughter Covfefe. The cross of Into Mischief and sons with mares by Unbridled son, Empire Maker, has been a prolific one and has provided Kentucky Derby winner Mandaloun and Dubai World Cup victor Laurel River. Into Mischief grade one winner Tommy Jo is out a mare by Empire Maker son, Pioneerof the Nile and there are also Into Mischief line stakes winners out of mares by Empire Maker sons Bodemeister and American Pharoah,  Classic Empire, and Cairo Prince.

The Into Mischief cross with a mare by Unbridled’s Song has produced grade one winner Gina Romantica, and from mares by sons of Unbridled’s Song, we find Breeders’ Cup Juvenile (G1) winner Ted Noffey out of a daughter of Old Fashioned,  graded winner Maximus Mischief out of a mare by Songandaprayer, and stakes winners out of mares by Political Force, Rockport Harbor, Cross Traffic, and Fiber Sonde. Unbridled’s Song could also be brought in through Liam’s Map, Arrogate, and Midshipman. There is an Into Mischief line group winner out of a mare by Spanish Steps – a brother to Unbridled’s Song – and there are also stakes winners out of mares by other Unbridled sons, Broken Vow, Saarland, and Harlington.

Out of a mare from the Cryptoclearance branch of Fappiano, Into Mischief has graded stakes winner Conquest Enforcer out of a mare by Victory Gallop; there are ten stakes winners by Into Mischief and sons, including grade one winner Chocolate Gelato, out of mares by Candy Ride (sire of Twirling Candy and Gun Runner), and grade one winner Doppelganger is out of a mare by Fappiano who is by Quiet American (grandsire of Midnight Lute).

Into Mischief has graded winner Golden Mischief is out of a mare by Mr. Prospector son Carson City, and graded winner Gas Station Sushi is out of a mare by Carson City son Five Star Day, which also suggests daughters of City Zip. Into Mischief has sired stakes winners out of daughters of Mutakddim and Bob and John (both by Seeking the Gold, also sire of Petionville and Cape Town), and graded stakes winner Miss Mischief out of a mare by Lemon Drop Kid (by Kingmambo).

Overall, almost any strain of Mr. Prospector might prove positive here, but we can note that Into Mischief has also sired graded winners Bye Bye and Resilience out of mares by Smart Strike, also the broodmare sire of Authentic stakes winner Verifire. Smart Strike is sire of Lookin at Lucky (broodmare sire of Into Mischief grade one winner Timberlake), Curlin (broodmare sire of three Into Mischief stakes winners) and English Channel. Into Mischief also has stakes winners out of mares by Thunder Gulch and Pulling Punches (by Two Punch, also sire of Smoke Glacken). Out of a mare by Mr. Prospector line stallion Street Sense, whose granddam is half-sister to Mr. Greeley, Authentic’s broodmare sire, comes graded stakes winning two-year-old Brave Deb. From another branch of the sire line stemming from Mr. Prospector’s sire, Raise a Native, that of Majestic Prince, Into Mischief has graded stakes winner Mighty Mischief out of a mare by Super Saver (by Maria’s Mon), himself sire of Runhappy.

Turning to the Northern Dancer line, we find that Into Mischief has enjoyed considerable success with mares from the Danzig line, including Authentic stakes winner Tomasello out of a mare by War Front (also sire of Data Link – broodmare sire of an Into Mischief line stakes winner – The Factor, Declaration of War, Summer Front, and Omaha Beach). Other sources of Danzig that would appeal here, including Belong to Me and Exchange Rate.

Into Mischief’s millionaire Vyjack is out of a mare by Stravinsky, a son of the Northern Dancer horse, Nureyev. Other sources of Nureyev include Fasliyev, Spinning World, Theatrical, Unusual Heat, and Atticus. Into Mischief is also emerging an option for the Medaglia d’Oro branch of Sadler’s Wells – a three-quarters brother to Nureyev. There are a pair of graded stakes winners by Into Mischief line stallions out of mares by Medaglia d’Oro mare, grade one winners Ways and Means and graded winner Highly Motivated out of mares by Medaglia d’Oro son Warrior’s Reward, and grade one winner Raging Torrent out of a mare by Violence. This suggests trying mares by Kitten’s Joy and Artie Schiller, both by Medaglia d’Oro’s sire, El Prado. The Into Mischief cross over mares by Sadler’s Wells’ son Galileo has also been a grade one producing one, and Galileo sons in the U.S. include Magicianand Cape Blanco.

On the cross with A.P. Indy line mares, Into Mischief is the sire of grade one winner Atone out of a mare by A.P. Indy himself. The Into Mischief line appears to have a strong affinity for A.P. Indy grandson Tapit (by Pulpit), notably with the Kentucky Oaks winner Pretty Mischievous. Tapit is sire of Constitution, Cupid, Frosted, Tapizar, Tonalist, Tapiture, and Trappe Shot. Pulpit is also sire of Corinthian (broodmare sire of an Into Mischief line graded stakes winner), Sky Mesa, and Stroll.
