First foal is a colt for Spendthrift’s Can the Man

February 5, 2016

Spendthrift Farm’s Can the Man, the Grade 1-performing juvenile by leading sire Into Mischief, sired his first reported foal on February 3rd when a colt was born at Breakaway Farm in Indiana.

Bred by Richard and Connie Snyder’s Cove Springs Farm, the bay colt is out of the nine-time-winning Birdstone mare Ms. Bird Watch, a half-sister to multiple stakes winner Hold the Salt.

“First of all, we sold Can the Man as a 2-year-old when he topped the Barretts sale for $320,000,” said Richard Snyder. “So we are ecstatic and humbled to have played such a big part in Can the Man, from owning and selling him, to now having his first foal. This colt has a tremendous body with a very big hip, much like his sire. He has outstanding bone and size for a maiden foal. He’s really a spitting image of Can the Man right down to the small star on his head. We will be breeding two mares back to Can the Man after seeing the quality of this colt.”

After topping the Barretts May Sale, Can the Man impressively won his debut at Del Mar for trainer Bob Baffert. In just his second start, he placed in the Del Mar Futurity (G1) after encountering a troubled trip. The precocious 2-year-old colt went on to capture the Speakeasy S. at Santa Anita in 1:09 2/5 to close out his juvenile campaign.

In his first start as a 3-year-old, Can the Man stretched his speed around two turns to win the Affirmed S. (G3) wire to wire at Santa Anita. By Into Mischief, Can the Man hails from the Grade 2-winning Danzig mare Smolensk, a half-sister to Broodmare of the Year Better Than Honour.

Can the Man covered 114 mares in his first season at stud in 2015. He’s set to stand his second season in 2016 for a fee of $3,500 S&N, and is available through Spendthrift’s “Breed Secure” program for a fee of $5,000.
