Alan Porter’s 2023 Breeding Analysis for Gormley

Winner of the Frontrunner Stakes (G1) and Santa Anita Derby (G1), Gormley is the only son of Malibu Moon to capture grade one events at two and three. A graded stakes siring freshman of 2021, he again ranked high among the second season sires of 2022.

Gormley’s first crop two-year-old graded winner, High Oak, who took the Saratoga Special Stakes (G2) and his juvenile stakes winner Bron and Brow are out of a mares from the Gone West line. High Oak is out of mare by Elusive Quality (sire of Quality Road, Great Notion and Smarty Jones) and Bron and Brow is out of mare by Changeintheweather. Out of other mares from this line, Malibu Moon sired a grade one winner out of a Grand Slam mare, and stakes winners out of mares by Speightstown (a reverse cross to the dam of Gormley, and himself sire of Munnings and Central Banker), also suggesting Mr. Greeley (sire of El Corredor and Whywhywhy) and Proud Citizen. Malibu Moon is out of a mare by Mr. Prospector, but has sired nearly 20 stakes winners, out of Mr. Prospector line mares. The Fappiano branch has provided the dams of Kentucky Derby winner Orb, who is out of a mare by Unbridled, and three stakes winners, including grade one winners Moonshine Memories and Magnum Moon, out of mares by Unbridled’s Song (sire of Cross Traffic, Midshipman, Dunkirk, Even the Score, First Defence himself broodmare sire of a Malibu Moon stakes winner – Old Fashioned, Rockport Harbor, Songandaprayer and Zensational). He has a stakes winner out of a mare by Real Quiet (sire of Midnight Lute), a graded winner out of a mare by that horse’s sire, Quiet American, a graded winner of a mare by Rubiano, and a stakes winner out of a mare by Eddington. There is a grade one winner out of a mare by a son of Conquistador Cielo, and graded stakes-winning millionaire out of a mare by Distorted Humor (sire of Jimmy Creed and Maclean’s Music) and a graded stakes winner out of a mare by Smart Strike (sire of Curlin, Lookin At Lucky and English Channel).

Gormley’s stakes winner, Benevengo is out of a daughter of Medaglia d’Oro (sire of Warrior’s Reward and Violence), which suggests other sons of El Prado, such as Kitten’s Joy and Artie Schiller. This is a branch of the Sadler’s Wells line, which could also be brought in through Magician, Cape Blanco, Powerscourt and Horse Chestnut. Gormley is out of a mare by a son of Storm Cat – like Sadler’s Wells a Northern Dancer line horse and has already sire graded placed Mama Rina out of a mare by Storm Cat son, Forest Wildcat (sire of Wildcat Heir) and graded placed Headline Report out of a mare by Tale of the Cat (sire of Lion Hearted, who is himself broodmare sire of a Malibu Moon stakes winner, and also sire of Kantharos and Uncaptured, with Tale of the Cat also being available through Tale of Ekati). Malibu Moon has also done well with Storm Cat line mares in general, with the cross producing nearly 20 stakes winners. Mares by Harlan’s Holiday (sire of Into Mischief – broodmare sire of a Malibu Moon stakes winner – Shanghai Bobby and Majesticperfection) look interesting and Giant’s Causeway (sire of First Samurai – himself broodmare sire of a Malibu Moon graded stakes winner – Eskendereya, Not This Time and Creative Cause) and Hennessy (sire of Johannesburg, Henny Hughes and Cactus Ridge, himself broodmare sire of a Malibu Moon graded stakes winner; grandsire of Scat Daddy) also appear good sources.

Malibu Moon has also done well with Northern Dancer through Deputy Minister, including three stakes winners, among them grade one-winning Heavenly Love, out of mares by Deputy Minister himself, graded stakes winners out of mares by Awesome Again (sire of Ghostzapper, Paynter, Oxbow and Daaher) and Silver Deputy (sire of Posse) and stakes winners out of mares by Touch Gold and French Deputy. Other successful Northern Dancer sources include Danzig, who looks interesting here via Belong to Me, Chief’s Crown and War Front (sire of Declaration of War, The Factor, Summer Front and Hit it a Bomb), and who has also succeeded under Malibu Moon through Danehill, Langfuhr and Lost Solider, with Hard Spun and Exchange Rate being other possibles; Dixieland Band (sire of Dixie Union; grandsire of Union Rags); and Nureyev (sire of Theatrical, Unusual Heat, Atticus, Spinning World and Fasliyev).

Malibu Moon has done very well with Roberto line mares, getting two grade one winners out of Red Ransom mares, and he also has a graded winner out of a mare by Kris S. (sire of Arch, Prized, You and I and Kissin Kris; grandsire of Blame), a graded winner out of a mare by Dynaformer (sire of Temple City, who would give inbreeding to the dam of Malibu Moon, Point of Entry, Brilliant Speed and Purim) and a stakes winner out of a mare by Major Impact. Roberto is a Hail to Reason line stallion, and from the Halo branch of that line there is a grade one winner out of a mare by Southern Halo, and two graded winners from a mare by his son, More Than Ready, and a stakes winner out of a mare by Yankee Victor, a son of Saint Ballado (himself broodmare sire of a Malibu Moon stakes winner). There is also a stakes winner out of a mare by Hail to Reason grandson, Cure the Blues (sire of American Chance).

From Blushing Groom line mares Malibu Moon has three stakes winners, one grade one, from a daughter of Rahy, a grade two winner out of a mare by Mt. Livermore (sire of Housebuster and Orientate), and two-year-old graded winner Greyvitos out of a mare by Najran (by Runaway Groom, sire of Cherokee Run, and grandsire of Kafwain and Yonaguska).

From the In Reality line, Malibu Moon has grade one winner Ask The Moon and graded winner Capitivating Moon out of mares by Valid Appeal (sire of Valid Expectations, Valid Wager and Successful Appeal) and grade one winner Come Dancing out of a mare by Tiznow (sire of Tiz Wonderful, Colonel John, Morning Line, Gemologist and Tizway) from the Relaunch branch, which is also represented by Skywalker (sire of Bertrando; grandsire of Officer) and Honour and Glory, whose son Put it Back is broodmare sire of Malibu Moon stakes winner.

Malibu Moon graded winner Eres Tu is out of a mare by Yes It’s True, sire of Yesbyjimminy, The Big Beast and Proud Accolade.
