Into Mischief colt sets track record in Columbia S.

March 6, 2021

Winfromwithin, one of Into Mischief’s three stakes winners on Saturday, set a course record while winning the $75,000 Columbia S. on the turf at Tampa Bay Downs.

The 3-year-old was making his turf stakes debut following a maiden grass win two months ago at Gulfstream Park, when he earned an excellent Beyer Speed Figure of 84.

The bay colt, a $100,000 Keeneland September yearling, wasted no time getting to the lead from his inside post as he guided the field through a half-mile in a swift :45.62. The Right Stuff, his closest pursuer for the first six furlongs, began to fade at that point, and Winfromwithin sprinted away from the field. He was all alone in the final furlong, winning by four lengths.

Winfromwithin’s time of 1:33.72 is a stakes and course record, besting the previous mark of 1:33.79 set by Lucky J J in 2000.

“I have so much respect for this horse,” jockey Luis Saez said. “Today, I just let him run. The big thing is he doesn’t like the stick – when you show it to him, he slows down – so I was able to take it away from him and he gave me everything he had. He’s just a very nice horse and I’m glad to be on him.”

Trainer Todd Pletcher was similarly pleased. “It was an impressive race for sure. Anytime you win by 4 lengths on the turf, it’s meaningful. He’s a talented colt and the owner has been very patient with him, and it’s starting to pay off.

“It looked like he was full of run throughout. He was pricking his ears back and forth even though he was running so fast, and I thought he did it very comfortably.”

Winfromwithin is owned by Jim Bakke and is now 2-1-0 in five starts while earning $92,120. He was bred in Kentucky by Mulholland Springs LLC. Winfromwithin is from the same family as noted sire Saint Ballado and champion Devil’s Bag.
