Into Mischief earns fifth consecutive General Sire title

January 2, 2024

Into Mischief continued to dominate the North American General Sire list in 2023, earning his fifth title in a row to place the Spendthrift stallion among the great sires in history.

In the past 100 years, only Bold Ruler has more leading sire titles, with Into Mischief tied with Bull Lea and Nasrullah with five titles each.

Into Mischief’s dominance in 2023 was complete. His total progeny earnings of $26,130,665 was more than $7.3 million than any other sire. He also led in every other major statistical category, notably by stakes winners, with 27, nine more than all other sires, and stakes horses, with 56, which was 19 more than his closest pursuer.

Into Mischief was responsible for six Grade 1 winners in 2023: Gina Romantica, Timberlake, Pretty Mischievous, Played Hard, Doppelganger and Atone.

“Into Mischief just continues to wade further and further into unchartered waters when it comes to the long and storied history of stallions in this industry,” said Spendthrift’s general manager Ned Toffey when announcing Into Mischief’s 2024 fee at $250,000 S&N. “Into Mischief had 15 yearlings sell for a million dollars or more this year, breaking Storm Cat’s record of 13 from 2005.”

Into Mischief is also emerging as a sire of sires. Maximus Mischief, who also stands at Spendthrift, was the leading First-Crop sire of 2023 by winners with 44. Authentic, another son of Into Mischief at Spendthrift, was the leading First-Crop yearling sire of 2023 with an auction average of $238,928.

Into Mischief, now 19, will have 13 crops of racing age in 2024. His lifetime stats include seven champions, 68 graded stakes winners, 141 stakes winners, and the earners of over $165 million.
