Miss Temple City scores historic win in Shadwell Turf Mile (G1)

Miss Temple City put herself in rare company Saturday when the 4-year-old Temple City filly conquered the $1 million Shadwell Turf Mile (G1) at Keeneland, the second time this year she has beaten males in a Grade 1 race.

Miss Temple City scorched the boys in the Maker’s Mark 46 Mile (G1) over the same course in April, and set herself up for a run at the Breeders’ Cup Mile (G1) with Saturday’s stalking victory.

With Pleuven (FR) setting a slow pace, Miss Temple City was put into the race early by Edgar Prado, stalking close behind. After Pleuven’s slow half-mile of :49.18, Prado sent Miss Temple City after the leader, taking over outside the quarter pole. Grade 1 winner Tourist made a furious rally in the stretch, but Miss Temple City would not give up, winning by a head.

Said an emotional trainer Graham Motion “I give the team for this one. Edgar did a great job getting her (just) off the pace. She’s probably the best filly I’ve (ever) had.”

The victory also made Miss Temple City racing’s newest millionaire, upping her earnings to $1,213,038 with a record of 5-3-2 in 14 starts. She is owned by the partnership of The Club Racing, LLC, Allen Rosenblum and Sagamore Farm.

Miss Temple City is one of Temple City’s three Grade 1 winners this year and is the lifetime leading earner for her sire, who ranks in the top-10 on the 2016 Third-Crop Sire list.
