Wild Vekoma takes Prairie Gold Lassie in stakes debut

July 11, 2026

Vekoma, the nation’s leading Third-Crop sire, got his 11th stakes winner of 2026 Friday evening at Prairie Meadows when Wild Vekoma rallied late to win the $100,000 Prairie Gold Lassie S.

The 2-year-old filly was making her stakes debut after breaking her maiden in her first lifetime start June 20, also at the Iowa oval.

With an alert break, Wild Vekoma tracked just behind pacesetter My Kid’s Said No, who turned for home with a two-length lead after a half-mile in :46.05. Down the stretch Wild Vekoma steadily reeled in the pacesetter and took over the lead with a sixteenth to run, then gamely held off the late-charging Cardio Cat to win by a half-length.

Wild Vekoma was bred and is owned by James Joregensen. The bay filly is out of stakes-placed A Wild Notion and is a half-sister to2024 Iowa Oaks winner Shezawildstorm.

Vekoma, whose 2026 is $100,000 S&N, was the champion Freshman Sire of 2024 and Second-Crop sire of 2025. In addition to leading the Third-Crop list, Vekoma is also in the top 10 on the General Sire list.
