Alan Porter’s 2026 Breeding Analysis for Chancer McPatrick

The only two-year-old this century to capture the Hopeful Stakes (G1) and Champagne Stakes (G1), Chancer McPatrick is from the first crop of brilliant young sire, McKinzie, out of a mare by Bernardini.

As we have said, Chancer McPatrick is out of a mare by Bernardini, a son of A.P. Indy. Crossing Chancer McPatrick back over A.P. Indy line mares would be well worth trying here. Particularly interesting would be mares by Tapit and sons. Tapit is by Pulpit, who is broodmare sire of a stakes winner of a mare by McKinzie’s sire, Street Sense, and is closely related to Bernardini. He is already broodmare sire of five stakes winners by Street Sense. Tapit is sire of Constitution, Frosted, Tonalist, Tapiture, Cupid, Tapizar, Trappe Shot and Concord Point. Pulpit can also be brought in through Sky Mesa, Stroll, Lydgate, American Freedom, Lucky Pulpit (sire of California Chrome), Mr. Speaker and Sightseeing.

Street Sense has eight stakes winners out mares by A.P. Indy himself and there is a Street Sense line stakes winner out of a mare by Mineshaft (sire of Dialed in and Discreetly Mine) and a Street Sense mare out of a mare by Flatter (sire of Upstart, West Coast and Flat Out).  There is also a Street Sense stakes winner out of a mare by Congrats – a brother to Flatter – with other A.P. Indy sources including Malibu Moon and Girolamo (both bred on the same cross as Pulpit, Mineshaft, Flatter and Congrats), Stephen Got Even (sire of First Dude), Take Charge Indy, Jump Start and Astrology (bred on the same cross as Bernardini).

McKinzie has grade one winner Scottish Lassie out of a mare by Bodemeister, a son of Empire Maker, himself broodmare sire of three stakes winners by Street Sense. Empire Maker is also sire of Pioneerof the Nile and grandsire of American Pharoah, Cairo Prince, and Classic Empire.

Empire Maker is a son of Unbridled. Unbridled’s son, Unbridled’s Song is broodmare sire of a Street Sense stakes winner, and he could be introduced through Arrogate, Liam’s Map, Cross Traffic, Rockport Harbor, First Defence, Songandaprayer, Midshipman, Even the Score, Half Ours, Zensational (broodmare sire of a Street Sense line stakes winner) and Old Fashioned. Unbridled is also sire of Grindstone (the sire of Birdstone) and Broken Vow. Other branches of Fappiano include Quiet American (who is grandsire of Midnight Lute), Rubiano (sire of Too Much Bling and Burning Roma) and Candy Ride (sire of Vekoma, Rock Your World, Twirling Candy and Gun Runner).

McKinzie’s grade one winning and classic placed son Baeza is out of a mare by Big Brown a son of Boundary, from the Danzig line. Street Sense himself did very well over Danzig line mares, including via Danehill and sons, Hard Spun, Imperialism (by Langfuhr, also sire of Lawyer Ron), War Front (sire of Omaha Beach, Declaration of War, The Factor, Summer Front, Air Force Blue, Jack Milton and Hit it a Bomb) and Anabaa, with other options including Exchange Rate, Belong to Me and War Chant.

The cross of McKinzie with mares from the Storm Cat line has already produced seven black-type horses, including graded stakes winner Cash Call out of a mare by D’Wildcat (by Forest Wildcat, broodmare the broodmare sire of a Street Sense grade one winner, and also sire of Wildcat Heir), and a stakes winner out of a mare by Stormy Atlantic. On this cross, Street Sense and sons also have a grade one winner out of a mare by Johannesburg (sire of Scat Daddy, and himself a son of Hennessy, also sire of Henny Hughes and Cactus Ridge), Giant’s Causeway (sire of Eskendereya, Shamardal, Giant Gizmo, First Samurai – broodmare sire of a Street Sense line stakes winner, Creative Cause, Not This Time and Carpe Diem), Freud (a brother to Giant’s Causeway), Pure Prize, Forestry and his son Shackleford, Tabasco Cat, Lion Heart (whose sire Tale of the Cat is broodmare sire of a McKinzie grade one performer, and can also be brought in through Lion Heart’s son Kantharos), and Stormin Fever. It would also be worth trying Storm Cat through Harlan’s Holiday who is bred on the same cross as Bernstein, sire of the granddam of Chancer McPatrick. He can be brought in through Into Mischief (sire of Goldencents, Authentic, Practical Joke and Maximus Mischief), Majesticperfection and Shanghai Bobby.

The stakes winning and grade one placed McKinzie filly, Quickick, is out of a mare by Graeme Hall, a son of Dehere, from the Deputy Minister line. Street Sense has crossed well over the Deputy Minister line with graded stakes winners out of mares by Ghostzapper (by Awesome Again, also sire of Paynter, Oxbow and Awesome of Course) and Daaher, and a stakes winner out of a mare by Touch Gold (sire of Midas Eyes, Mass Media and Medallist). Deputy Minister can also be brought in through Silver Deputy (sire of Posse, Badge of Silver and Spring At Last; grandsire of Kodiak Kowboy).

Street Sense has five stakes winners out of Medaglia d’Oro mares and another out of a mare by Medaglia d’Oro’s sire, El Prado. Medaglia d’Oro is sire of Bolt d’Oro and Violence, and El Prado is also sire of Kitten’s Joy and Artie Schiller. El Prado is a son of Sadler’s Wells, and Street Sense has a stakes winner out Sadler’s Wells son Galileo (represented in the U.S. by Magician and Cape Blanco) and Powerscourt.

McKinzie’s first crop stakes winner Cyclone State is out of a mare by Dominus, a son of Smart Strike, and Street Sense has a stakes winner out of a mare by Smart Strike son Curlin (sire of Vino Rosso, Palace Malice, Exaggerator and Good Magic) and Smart Strike is also sire of Lookin At Lucky, English Channel and Square Eddie.
