September 27, 2026
After losing the lead briefly at the top of the Remington Park stretch, Grand Yaupon fought back gamely to best Iamkirk by a half-length in the $150,000 Clever Trevor S. on Sept. 27 [VIDEO].
The victory gave the 2-year-old son of Yaupon his first stakes win. In his first stakes start, Grand Yaupon was second in the Ellis Park Juvenile to the undefeated and subsequent Iroquois S. (G3) winner Salahudin.
Breaking from the outside post in the field of seven, Grand Yaupon raced very wide in third down the backstretch. He made a move for the lead going into the turn and took over soon after. He was quickly joined by Iamkirk, who took over the lead with a quarter-mile to go. Grand Yaupon dug in and reclaimed the lead in the next furlong, then held sway to the wire.
“It was the first time I had ridden Grand Yaupon,” said winning rider Erik Asmussen, “But my brother [Keith] had been on him and gave me a good spin on how to ride him and what he likes.”
The winner is now 2-1-0 in five starts and has earned $215,613 for the Estate of Mike McCarthy.
Grand Yaupon was bred in Kentucky by Thomas S. Hinkle, Henry L. Hinkle & Robert B. Kessinger.
