Streaking Pioneer Spirit wins $100,000 Fifth Season S.

Malibu Moon’s Pioneer Spirit picked up his second straight stakes win and third race in a row Saturday at Oaklawn Park with a gallant victory in the $100,000 Fifth Season S.
The 7-year-old veteran was claimed for $150,000 three starts back (a race he won) and subsequently won the Tenacious S. at Fair Grounds in Dec. 20 before shipping to Oaklawn for trainer Robertino Diodoro and owners Lawrence Roman, Heads Up Racing and Lucky Dog Stables.
Saturday’s win upped Pioneer Spirit’s earnings to $756,578 from a mark of 12-4-7 in 29 starts.
On the front end from the get-go in the one-mile Fifth Season, Pioneer Spirit put away Sevier after five furlongs, then opened up a big enough gap to hold off the late charge of Bankit, winning by a head in 1:38.94 on the “good” main track.
Malibu Moon’s Saturday also included a sharp maiden special weight win by the 3-year-old colt Amen Corner at Laurel Park and a second-place finish for Backsideofthemoon in the Jazil S. at Aqueduct.
