"A generation or more ago Paynter, Awesome Patriot, and Oxbow would have been described confidently as “brothers in blood”" -John Sparkman

Alan Porter breeding analysis for Awesome Patriot

A stakes winner and graded stakes performing juvenile, Awesome Patriot is a brother to 2012 Preakness Stakes (gr. I) victor Oxbow, and very closely related to spectacular grade one winner Paynter. By Breeders’ Cup Classic (gr. I) winner and outstanding sire, Awesome Again, Awesome Patriot is out of a sister to two-time Breeders’ Cup Classic (gr. I) victor, and Horse of the Year Tiznow, another who consistently ranks among North America’s best sires. In addition, Awesome Patriot is bred on very similar lines to Awesome Again’s Horse of the Year, Ghostzapper, himself now a prolific sire of stakes winners.

Ghostzapper has done very well when crossed over mares from the Mr. Prospector  line. He has grade one winner Better Lucky out of a mare by Seeking the Gold (sire of Mutakddim, Petionville and Cape Town) and grade one winner Starship Truffles out of a mare by Not For Love. From the Forty Niner branch of Mr. Prospector, Ghostzapper has graded stakes winners from daughters of Twining, and Coronado’s Quest, with other sources of this strain including Distorted Humor and sons, Trippi , Gold Fever, Roar, Tactical Advantage, Gold Case and Luhuk. Ghostzapper has a graded stakes winner out of a mare by Gone West, a line that has also done well under Tiznow, and which can  be brought in through Speightstown, Elusive Quality, Grand Slam, Mr. Greeley, Proud Citizen and West By West. From the Fappiano, branch of Mr. Prospector there is a graded winner by Ghostzapper out of a mare by Unbridled, and a multi-millionaire by Awesome Again out of a mare by Pentelicus (three-quarter brother to Unbridled). This suggests trying mares by Cahill Road (a brother to Unbridled), Unbridled’s Song and sons, such as Songandaprayer and Even the Score; Empire Maker; Broken Vow; Grindstone and his son Birdstone; and also introducing Fappiano through other sources such as Rubiano (who brings in a sister to Relaunch, the broodmare sire of Awesome Patriot), Quiet American  and his son Real Quiet; and Cryptoclearance, his son Victory Gallop, and his grandson, Candy Ride. Other branches of Mr. Prospector to produce stakes winners for Ghostzapper, and Awesome Again and his others are Conquistador Cielo (who could be good through Marquetry and Artax),  Carson City (whose son, City Zip, is out of a mare who produced Ghostzapper to Awesome Again, and who is also sire of Cuvee, Flying Chevron, Five Star Day, Lord Carson and Good and Tough), Smoke Glacken (by Two Punch), Jade Hunter, Gulch  (sire of Thunder Gulch) and Miswaki (sire of Black Tie Affair and grandsire of Formal Gold). Introducing Mr. Prospector through Woodman should also be profitable.

Again over mares descending from Raise a Native through Alydar (including through Saratoga Six and Turkoman) and Maria’s Mon, from the Wavering Monarch/Majestic Light branch of Raise a Native.

Awesome Patriot carries Seattle Slew in the distaff side of his pedigree, but Awesome Again and his sons have done well when crossed back over that strain, and Tiznow, the brother to the dam of Awesome Patriot has enjoyed success with Seattle Slew inbreeding, so this strain looks well worth introducing. The cross with Seattle Slew  through A.P. Indy and sons has produced four stakes winners for Awesome Again and his son, including one out of a mare by Malibu Moon, other sources would including Pulpit (sire of Tapit, who gives inbreeding Relaunch and a sister, and of Sky Mesa), Mineshaft, Bernardini, Congrats, Flatter, Aptitude, Golden Missile, Friends Lake, Jump Start and Old Trieste. There are also four stakes winners by Awesome Again and sons out of mares by Capote and his son Boston Harbor, which also suggests mares by Matty G. Other Seattle Slew sources include Avenue of Flags (broodmare sire of a Ghostzapper graded stakes winner), Slew o’ Gold, Septieme Ciel, Doneraile Court, Fast Play, Gold Legend, Slewpy, Metfield and Houston. There is also a grade one winner by Awesome Again out of a mare from the same Boldnesian line as Seattle Slew, from a daughter of Bold Revenue (by Bold Ruckus, sire of Beau Genius, Bold Executive, Highland Ruckus, Kiridashi and Katahaula County).

From the Roberto line Ghostzapper has sired grade one winners Contested out of a mare by Arch (by Kris S., also sire of Prized, Kissin Kris and Rock Hard Ten) and grade one winner Stately Victor out of a mare by Dynaformer, and there are also stakes winners from this line out of mares by Silver Hawk and Red Ransom. Roberto is a Hail to Reason line stallion, and from the Halo branch of this line, Awesome Again has the outstanding performer Game On Dude out of a mare by Devil His Due (by Devil’s Bag, sire of Abaginone, Twilight Agenda, and Diablo), and a graded winner out of a mare by Saint Ballado (a brother to Devil’s Bag, and sire of Sweetsouthernsaint, Straight Man, Yankee Victor and Captain Bodgit). Halo might also be tried through More Than Ready.

Awesome Again and his sons have enjoyed considerable success when bred back over a variety of branches of their own Northern Dancer line. This includes Storm Bird, including the Storm Cat sons Tale of the Cat and Storm Boot (inviting other Storm Cat line stallions such as Giant’s Causeway, Hennessy and his son, Johannesburgh, Forest Wildcat, Forestry, Stormin Fever and Stormy Atlantic. Out of mares from the Danzig branch there are stakes winners out of mares by Dayjur, Langfuhr and Polish Numbers, with Boundary, Chief’s Crown, Belong to Me, War Chant, War Front, Belong to Me, Exchange Rate, Honor Grades, Lost Soldier, War Front, War Chant, Danzig Connection and Katowice. Other branches of Northern Dancer to produce the dams of Awesome Again line stakes winners are Dixieland Band (sire of Dixie Union, Bowman’s Band, Chimes Band, Citidancer, Dixie Brass and Dixieland Heat ) and Theatrical (by Nureyev).

From the Caro line Awesome Again has grade one winner Toccet out of a mare by Cozzene, and there are also graded stakes winners out of mares by Indian Charlie (by In Excess) and With Approval. There are also stakes winners out of mares from the Damascus line out of daughters of Time For a Change (sire of Fly So Free), Skip Trial (sire of Skip Away) and Valley Crossing (by Private Account, sire of Private Terms, Personal Flag, Corporate Report, Unaccounted For and Secret Hello; grandsire of Afternoon Deelites) and Broad Brush (sire of Include).
