Alan Porter breeding analysis for Dominus

A multiple graded two winner, who captured graded stakes on dirt and turf, Dominus is by two-time Leading Sire Smart Strike, out of a multiple stakes winning mare.

The cross of Smart Strike over Northern Dancer through Danzig line mares has been an outstanding one  with 16 stakes winners including Champion and classic winner Lookin at Lucky (out of a mare by Belong to Me, who has proved to be excellent  under Smart Strike), Champion and grade  winner Soaring Free, and grade one winner Shadow Cast (dam by Dayjur, who also gives inbreeding to Mr. Prospector), as well as from daughters of Boundary, Danehill, Chief’s Crown, Polish Numbers and Zieten. From daughters of Deputy Minister, Smart Strike sired Horse of the Year Curlin and millionaire Tenpins, and he also has stakes winners from daughters of Deputy Minister horses, French Deputy and Salt Lake, while other possible would include Silver Deputy, Dehere, Awesome Again and Touch Gold. Deputy Minister’s sire, Vice Regent, is also sire of Regal Classic, who gives inbreeding to the family of Smart Strike, and is broodmare sire of two stakes winners by Smart Strike.

There are also 12 stakes winners by Smart Strike and his sons out of Nijinsky II line mares (including from daughters of Generous (by Caerleon), Sky Classic (giving inbreeding to the family of Smart. Smart), Gren Dancer and Fred Astaire, while Strawberry Road and Royal Academy both appeal. Smart Strike also has Champion English Channel out of mare by Theatrical (by Nureyev, also sire of Atticus, Fasliyev, Stravinsky and Spinning World ), a Champion out of a mare by Gate Dancer (by Sovereign Dancer), and a two-year-old grade one winner out of a mare by El Gran Senor. Other branches of the Northern Dancer line which have proved successful when bred to Smart Strike include Dixieland Band; Storm Bird and Storm Cat (grandsire of Smart Strike’s brilliant juvenile My Miss Aurelia, who out of a mare by Sea of Secrets, and is also inbred to Mr. Prospector), whose sons include Tale of the Cat, Storm Boot, Giant’s Causeway, Forestry, Hennessy, Stormy Atlantic, Stormin Fever, Forest Wildcat, Cat Thief, Tabasco Cat and Tactical Cat; Sadler’s Wells (available through El Prado, Medaglia d’Oro, Kitten’s Joy, Artie Schiller and King of Kings) and Lyphard. We could also consider the Icecapade branch of Nearctic, through Wild Again (broodmare sire of three Smart Strike stakes winners).

Smart Strike has sired a multiple graded stakes winner out of a mare by Pleasant Colony (sire of Pleasant Tap and Pleasantly Perfect), who is by His Majesty from the Ribot line. From this same line he also stakes winners out of daughters of Alleged and Lost Code.

Smart Strike and a son both have graded winners out of mares by A.P. Indy (sire of Pulpit, Malibu Moon, Mineshaft, Flatter, Congrats and Golden Missile; grandsire of Tapit and Sky Mesa), other successful branches of Seattle Slew here include Fast Play and Capote.

Smart Strike is also beginning to show an affinity for the Blushing Groom line, particularly through Rahy (broodmare sire of Smart Strike’s grade one winner Furthest Land), and he also has a stakes winner out of a mare by Runaway Groom (sire of Cherokee Run). From the Roberto branch of the Hail to Reason line, Smart Strike and his sons have stakes winners out of mares by Lear Fan, Silver Hawk and Red Ransom. There is also a stakes winner by a Smart Strike son out of a mare by Saint Ballado (brother to Devil’s Bag), from the Halo branch of Hail to Reason. From the Caro line, there is a Smart Strike graded stakes  winner out a mare by With Approval, and a stakes winner by a son of Smart Strike out of a mare by Cozzene.
