Alan Porter Breeding Analysis for Freedom Child

Freedom Child is a spectacular graded stakes winner by Malibu Moon, one of A.P. Indy’s most successful sire sons. His dam, a daughter of Deputy Minister, is out of grade one winning two-year-old City Band, a sister to the second dam of Champion Two-Year-Old Shanghai Bobby.

Malibu Moon has done well with mares descending from Mr. Prospector, this cross providing more than a dozen of his stakes winners. From the Fappiano branch of Mr. Prospector, Malibu Moon is sire of Kentucky Derby (gr. I) victor Orb, out of a mare by Unbridled, a graded stakes winner out of a mare by Quiet American, and stakes winners out of mares by Quiet American’s son, Real Quiet (sire of Midnight Lute), Press Card, Rubiano and Pentelicus. Unbridled could be brought in through Unbridled’s Song (sire of Songandaprayer, Even The Score and Rockport Harbor), Grindstone (sire of Birdstone), Empire Maker and Broken Vow (who looks particularly interesting). Malibu Moon’s Champion Declan’s Moon is out of a mare by Norquestor (a son of Conquistador Cielo, who is himself broodmare sire of two other Malibu Moon stakes winners, and also available through Marquetry and Artax). From the Gone West branch Malibu Moon has grade one winner Malibu Prayer out of a mare by Grand Slam (like Norquestor, a Mr. Prospector/Northern Dancer cross), and a stakes winner out of a mare by Elusive Quality , which also suggests trying mares by Mr. Greeley, Speightstown or Proud Citizen. Malibu Moon also has a stakes winner out of a mare by Maryland stalwart Allen’s Prospect. Other broodmare sires that have produced stakes winners for A.P. Indy line stallions include Woodman (three-parts-brother to Not For Love), Seeking the Gold (sire of Mutakddim, Petionville and Cape Town), Kingmambo (sire of Lemon Drop Kid, whose dam is a three-quarters sister to A.P. Indy), Miswaki (sire of Black Tie Affair; grandsire of Formal Gold), Machiavellian (sire of Street Cry), Smart Strike and Two Punch.

Mr. Prospector is a Raise a Native line sire, and Malibu Moon has also worked well over mares descending from Raise a Native through Mr. Prospector’s close relative, Alydar, including CCA Oaks (gr. I) winner Funny Moon out of a mare by Easy Goer. Staying with Raise a Native, Malibu Moon is also sire of grade two winner Luna Vega out of a mare by Rock Royalty; graded winner Rodman out of a mare by Affirmed (by Exclusive Native); and Malibu Moonshine, a multiple stakes winner over $500,000, out of a mare by Coastal (by Majestic Prince, who could be introduced through Maria’s Mon and his son, Monarchos).

Malibu Moon has also enjoyed considerable success with Northern Dancer line mares. From Danzig line mares Malibu Moon has sired three stakes winners – a graded stakes winner out of a mare by Danehill, and stakes winners out of mares by Sea Hero, Be My Chief (by Chief’s Crown) and Lost Soldier. Other Danzig line stallions to produce A.P. Indy stakes winners, include Belong to Me, Boundary (sire of Big Brown and Pomeroy), Danzig Connection, Honor Grades, Deerhound, Langfuhr, Honor Grades (who gives inbreeding to the dam of A.P. Indy), Military and Pine Bluff. Other sources that appeal include Exchange Rate, War Chant, War Front and Hard Spun.

Malibu Moon has a stakes winner out of a mare by Storm Cat, and from sons of that horse, has grade one winner Eden’s Moon out of mare by Giant’s Causeway, and graded stakes winners from daughters of Forest Wildcat (sire of Wildcat Heir and D’Accord) and Tactical Cat, and a stakes winner out of mares by Hennessy (sire of Johannesburg and Henny Hughes). This also suggests mares by such as Tale of the Cat, Stormy Atlantic, Forestry, Tabasco Cat, Freud, Harlan’s Holiday (sire of Champion Shanghai Bobby from this family) and Lion Hearted. Malibu Moon has sired grade two winner Sweet August Moon out of a mare by Royal Academy, a son of Nijinsky II, who is closely related to Storm Cat, and he has also sired graded winner Malibu Pier (dam by Lomitas) and a stakes winner out of a mare by Sky Classic, both from this branch of Northern Dancer. Malibu Moon has stakes winners out of mares by both Dixieland Band and his son Citidancer which would encourage trying daughters of Dixie Union. From the Sadler’s Wells line, Malibu Moon is sire of a stakes winner out of a mare by El Prado (sire of Medaglia d’Oro, Kitten’s Joy and Artie Schiller). Malibu Moon also has a stakes winner out of a mare by Wild Again, who is by Northern Dancer's fellow Nearctic son, Icecapade. Icecapade’s son, Clever Trick, might also work here.

Malibu Moon’s grade one winning filly, Malibu Mint, is out of a mare by Key to the Mint, by Graustark, from the Ribot sire line. He also has a stakes winner out of a mare by Cormorant (sir e of Go For Gin), who is by His Majesty, a brother to Graustark, and a stakes winner of a mare by St. Jovite (by Pleasant Colony, a son of His Majesty). Pleasant Colony and his son Pleasant Tap, Colonial Affair, Cherokee Colony , Roanoke and Lac Ouimet.

Malibu Moon has been extremely successful with mares from the Turn-To line. From the Roberto branch he has multiple grade one winner Devil May Care out of a mare by Red Ransom, graded stakes winner Bobina out of a mare by Dynaformer, and the very talented By the Light from a daughter of Major Impact. Roberto might also work through Kris S., (sire of Arch, Prized, You and I and Rock Hard Ten) and Lear Fan. His grade two winning son Perfect Moon is out of a mare by a son of Halo; and from a mare by Halo grandson More Than Ready (by Southern Halo) has brilliant filly Kauai Katie, and her graded winning sister Winding. Continuing with the Turn-to line, we can note Malibu Moon grade two winner Moon Catcher, out of a mare by Smarten (by Cyane); stakes winner Malibu Sue is out of a mare  by Lord Parham (by Lord Gaylord, by Sir Gaylord), and stakes winner Moonlit Habit out of a mare by Habitony (by another Sir Gaylord son, Habitat). Sir Gaylord could also be introduced through Lord Avie. Malibu Moon’s sire, A.P. Indy has also sired grade one winners out of mares by Turn-to/Hail to Reason descendants Cox's Ridge and Cure the Blues (sire of American Chance).

Malibu Moon has done extremely well with mares descending from Bold Ruler through Bold Bidder, getting stakes winners out of mares by Spectacular Bid, Caveat and his sire, Cannonade. Malibu Moon also has a stakes winner out of a mare by Compelling Sound, who is from Malibu Moon’s own male line, that of Seattle Slew. From the Nasrullah branch of the Blushing Groom line Malibu Moon has grade one winner Life at Ten from a daughter of Rahy and graded stakes winner Sara Louise out of a mare by Mt. Livermore (sire of Orientate, Housebuster and Peaks and Valleys).

Malibu Moon has three stakes winners out of mares from the In Reality line, including grade one winner Ask The Moon out of a mare by Valid Appeal (sire of Successful Appeal, Valid Wager and Valid Expectations), and by Skywalker, and his son Bertrando, from the Relaunch branch (which could also be introduced through Waquoit, Tiznow, Officer, Honour and Glory and Put It Back).

Malibu Moon’s broodmare sire, Mr. Prospector, is out of a mare by Nashua, and duplicating that horse has worked well, including through the previously mentioned Roberto, John Alden (a Prince John line stallion, out of a Nashua mare), and Noble Nashua. There is also a stakes winner from the Prince John line through Summing (from the Speak John/Verbatim branch), and he is also sire of stakes winners out of mares by Thirty Eight Paces (by Nodouble), and Amerrico (by Dr. Fager).

There is also a stakes winner from the Prince John line through Summing (from the Speak John/Verbatim branch), and he is also sire of stakes winners out of mares by Thirty Eight Paces (by Nodouble), and Amerrico (by Dr. Fager).
