Alan Porter Breeding Analysis for Goldencents

An extremely versatile and speedy multiple grade one winner, Goldencents displayed top-class form at two, three and four. He is the leading son of fast-emerging young sire Into Mischief, from the Harlan’s Holiday branch of the Storm Cat line.

Goldencents is bred on an extended Northern Dancer/Mr. Prospector cross, but both of those strains are far enough back inhis pedigree that he is open to cross back over mares from either line, and Into Mischief has achieved success with representatives of both. Into Mischief’s graded stakes winner Vyjack is out of a mare by Stravinsky, a Nureyev son who carries Mr. Prospector in the pedigree. Other sources of Nureyev include Fasliyev (out of a Mr. Prospector mare) Spinning World, Theatrical and Atticus (bred on the same Northern Dancer/Secretariat cross as Storm Cat, who is in the male-line of Goldencents). Into Mischief also has graded stakes winner Can the Man out of a mare by Danzig, who could be introduced through Chief’s Crown (bred on the Northern Dancer/Secretariat cross) and his son Concerto; Langfuhr, Polish Numbers, War Chant, Pine Bluff (bred on a parallel cross to Harlan, the grandsire of Into Mischief, and broodmare sire of a graded stakes winner by that horse), Belong to Me (a parallel cross to Harlan’s Holiday), Boundary, Danzig Connection, Exchange Rate, Honor Grades, Lost Soldier (another Northern Dancer/Secretariat cross), War Front, Katowice and Ghazi.

Harlan’s Holiday is sire of group winner My Special J’s out of a mare by Deputy Minster (who can be brought in through Silver Deputy, Awesome Again, Touch Gold, Deputy Commander, Salt Lake, Dehere, French Deputy, Forest Camp, Ghostzapper, Posse and Badge of Silver), and graded stakes winner Summer Applause out of a mare by Royal Academy (a close relative to Storm Cat, and by Nijinsky II, who is also available through Strawberry Road - who looks particularly good – and Sky Classic).

Into Mischief’s talented son, Vicar’s In Trouble, is out of a mare by Vicar, a son of Wild Again (by Northern Dancer’s close relative, Icecapade), and there is also a Harlan’s Holiday stakes winner out of a mare by Vicar and another out of a mare by Wild Again. This strain could also be brought in through Wild RushOfflee Wild, Milwaukee Brew and Whiskey Wisdom.

Goldencents is out of a Mr. Prospector line mare, but this strain will only appear in the fifth generation of his foals, and crossing Goldencents back over mares from this this line should prove beneficial. Into Mischief has already sired stakes winner Sittin at the Bar out of a mare by Mutakddim (by Seeking the Gold, also sire of Petionville and Cape Town), and stakes winner Miss Mischief out of a mare by Lemon Drop Kid (by Kingmambo, also broodmare sire of a graded stakes winner by Harlans’s Holiday). We can note that Harlan’s Holiday has also been very good with Mr. Prospector line mares. Particularly strong has been the cross with Fappiano line mares, which has resulted in ten stakes winners. The Unbridled version has been especially good with graded stakes winner Gamay Noir and classic placed stakes winner Denis of Cork out of mares by Unbridled himself; graded stakes winners Intense Holiday and Necessary Evil out of mares by Unbridled’s Song; graded stakes winner Poker Player out of a mare by Red Bullet; stakes winner Meadowood out of a mare by Untuttable; and stakes winner Esmeraldina out of a mare by Spanish Steps (a brother to Unbridled’s Song). Unbridled might also be brought in through Birdstone (a reverse Mr. Prospector/Storm Bird cross to Goldencents), Broken Vow (who should work well here), Empire Maker, Eddington, Eurosilver, Rockport Harbor and Songandaprayer. From other branches of Fappiano, Harlan’s Holiday’s graded winner Ami’s Holiday is out of a mare by Victory Gallop (by Cryptoclearance, also grandsire of Candy Ride), and he also has two stakes winners out of mares by Quiet American (sire of Real Quiet, and grandsire of Midnight Lute, who might suit well here).

Harlan’s Holiday has a stakes winner out of a mare by Thunder Gulch (a reverse Mr. Prospector/Storm Bird cross to Goldencents, and sire of Point Given). His speedy daughter, J Z Warrior, is out of a mare by Carson City (sire of such as City Zip, Lord Carson, Good and Tough, Five Star Day and Cuvee), and he also has multiple graded stakes winner Willcox Inn out of a mare by Gone West (sire of Grand Slam, Elusive Quality, Mr. Greeley, and Speightstown, who is a reverse Mr. Prospector/Storm Cat cross to Goldencents), as well as stakes winners out of mares by Unreal Zeal, Distant View, Hansel (by Woodman), Not For Love (a three-quarters brother to Woodman) and Native Prospector. Mr. Prospector is a son of Raise a Native, and from the Majestic Prince/Majestic Light branch of that line, Harlan’s Holiday is sire of the brilliantly fast grade one winner Majesticperfection out of a daughter of Wavering Monarch, stakes winner Bear Holiday from a mare by Maria’s Mon (sire of Monarchos), and stakes winner Harlan’s Song out of a mare by Eternal Prince. Another branch of Raise a Native to try here is Alydar (through Saratoga Six, Alysheba, Easy Goer, Strike the Gold, Criminal Type and Red Attack, broodmare sire of a stakes winner by Into Mischief’s grandsire, Harlan).

Into Mischief is sire of stakes winner Mischievous Mama out of a mare by Afternoon Deelites, by Private Terms, a son of Private Account (who is available through Corporate Report, Personal Flag, Unaccounted For, Secret Hello and Valley Crossing). Private Account is by Damascus, and Eastern Echo and Highland Blade are Damascus line stallions who are broodmare sires of Harlan line stakes winners, and other sources include Ogygian, Bailjumper (sire of Skip Trial; grandsire of Skip Away), Time For A Change and Timeless Moment (sire of Gilded Time).

Harlan’s Holiday already has a graded stakes winner out of a mare by Relaunch, and a stakes winner out of a mare by his son Skywalker (sire of Bertrando, grandsire of Officer), with other sources including Bright Launch, Cee’s Tizzy (sire of Tiznow), Honour and Glory (sire of Put it Back) and Waquoit. Relaunch is a son of In Reality, and it would also be worth introducing that strain through Valid Appeal (sire of Valid Wager, Valid Expectations and Successful Appeal).

Goldencents should be well suited by mares carry from Ribot through the brothers His Majesty and Graustark. Particularly good should be Pleasant Colony, sire of such as Cherokee Colony and Colonial Affair - who look very good here, Lac Ouimet, Pleasant Tap, Roanoke and St. Jovite (who is already the broodmare sire of a Harlan’s Holiday stakes winner).

Into Mischief’s pedigree features the genetic relatives Halo and Stop the Music. Inbreeding to either of these might work well, with sources of Halo including Devil’s Bag, Saint Ballado (who are both from the same family as the broodmare sire of Into Mischief), Jolie’s Halo, Southern Halo and his son More Than Ready. The most notable sources of Stop the Music include Cure the Blues and Temperence Hill. Two other similarly-bred horses, Sir Ivor and Drone, are also worth introducing. We can also note that Harlan’s Holiday has graded stakes winners out of mares by Silver Hawk and Dynaformer (both by Roberto), and the Kris S. and Red Ransom branches of Roberto have also done well under Storm Cat.

Harlan’s Holiday’s granddam is bred on very similar lines to Boldnesian, who is in the sire line of Seattle Slew. From a mare by Seattle Slew son, Doneraile Court, Harlan’s Holiday is sire of graded stakes winner Euphrosyne, and he also has graded stakes winner Saratoga Sinner out of a mare by Slew City Slew, and a stakes winner out of a mare by Mineshaft (by Seattle Slew son, A.P. Indy).

Harlan’s Holiday has also found success with mares from the Blushing Groom line siring two stakes winners, including Champion Two-Year-Old Shanghai Bobby from a daughter of Orientate (by Mt. Livermore), and a stakes winner out of a mare by Rahy.
