Alan Porter Breeding Analysis for Into Mischief

Into Mischief is a grade one winning two-year-old from an exciting branch of the Storm Cat line. Winner of the Hollywood Futurity (G1) at two, Into Mischief was also a stakes winner and multiple grade one placed sprinting at three.

Into Mischief is the best two-year-old to represent his sire, Storm Cat’s grandson, Harlan’s Holiday. As one might have anticipated, Harlan’s Holiday has already demonstrated a strong affinity with Mr. Prospector line mares. His twice classic placed graded winner Denis of Cork is out of a mare by Unbridled, and his graded stakes winning juvenile filly Necessary Evil is out of a mare by Unbridled’s Song. These are from the Fappiano branch of Mr. Prospector, and suggest introducing other branches of that line, particularly Quiet American, Rubiano and Cryptoclearance (sire of Victory Gallop; grandsire of Candy Ride). Harlan’s Holiday’s speedy daughter, J Z Warrior, is out of a mare by Carson City (sire of such as City Zip, Lord Carson, Good and Tough, Five Star Day and Cuvee), and he also has multiple graded stakes winner Willcox Inn out of a mare by Gone West  (sire of Grand Slam, Elusive Quality, Mr. Greeley, and Speightstown, who would give a double of Storm Cat), and stakes winners out of mares by Coronado’s Quest (by Forty Niner, also sire of Distorted Humor, Tactical Advantage, Roar, End Sweep and Gold Fever, and grandsire of Trippi), Unreal Zeal, and Native Prospector. Mr. Prospector is a son of Raise a Native, and from the Majestic Prince/Majestic Light branch of that line, Harlan’s Holiday is sire of the brilliantly fast grade one winner Majesticperfection out of a daughter of Wavering Monarch, stakes winner Bear Holiday from a mare by Maria’s Mon (sire of Monarchos), and stakes winner Harlan’s Song out of a mare by Eternal Prince. Another branches of Raise a Native to try here is Alydar (through Saratoga Six, Alysheba, Easy Goer, Strike the Gold, Criminal Type and Red Attack, broodmare sire of a stakes winner by Into Mischief’s grandsire, Harlan).

Harlan’s Holiday already has a graded stakes winner out of a mare by Relaunch, and Storm Cat in general crosses well over this line. Relaunch could be introduce through Skywalker (sire of Bertrando, grandsire of Officer), Bright Launch, Cee’s Tizzy (sire of Tiznow), Honour and Glory (sire of Put it Back) and Waquoit. Relaunch is a son of In Reality, and it would also be worth introducing that strain through Valid Appeal (sire of Valid Wager, Valid Expectations and Successful Appeal).

Like many other Storm Cat line stallions, Into Mischief should be well suited by mares descending from Ribot through the brothers His Majesty and Graustark. Particularly good should be Pleasant Colony (sire of such as Cherokee Colony, Colonial Affair, Lac Ouimet, Pleasant Tap, Roanoke and St. Jovite, who is already the broodmare sire of a Harlan’s Holiday stakes winner). Graustark can be brought in through Key to the Mint (sire of Java Gold and Sauce Boat).

Into Mischief’s pedigree features the genetic relatives Halo and Stop the Music. Inbreeding to either of these might work well, with sources of Halo including Devil’s Bag, Saint Ballado (who are both from the same family as the broodmare sire of Into Mischief), Jolie’s Halo, Southern Halo and his son More Than Ready. The most notable sources of Stop the Music include Cure the Blues and Temperence Hill. Two other similarly-bred horses, Sir Ivor and Drone, are also worth introducing. We can also note that Harlan’s Holiday has graded stakes winners out of mares by Silver Hawk and Dynaformer (both by Roberto), and the Kris S. and Red Ransom branches of Roberto have also done well under Storm Cat.

There are two Harlan line stakes winners out of Damascus line mares, and this strain is good with Storm Cat in general. Eastern Echo and Highland Blade are Damascus line stallions who are broodmare sires of Harlan line stakes winners, and other sources include Private Account (sire of Private Terms, Corporate Report, Personal Flag, Unaccounted For, Secret Hello and Valley Crossing), Cutlass (sire of Cutlass Reality), Ogygian, and Bailjumper (Skip Trial; grandsire of Skip Away), Time For A Change and Timeless Moment (sire of Gilded Time).

Harlan’s Holiday’s granddam is bred on very similar lines to Boldnesian, sire of Bold Ruckus and Bold Reasoning. From a mare by Bold Ruckus, Harlan’s Holiday is already sire of graded stakes winning and grade one placed sprinter, Riley Tucker. Bold Reasoning is sire of Seattle Slew, and from a mare by Slew City Slew, Harlan’s Holiday is sire of graded stakes winner Saratoga Sinner.
