Alan Porter Breeding Analysis for Medal Count

A two-year-old winner on his debut, Medal Count showed himself among the best of his generation at three, winning the 8½ furlong Transylvania Stakes (gr. III), and taking second in the Blue Grass Stakes (gr. I), and third in the Belmont Stakes (gr. I).

Medal Count is by the exceptional sire, Dynaformer – also responsible for the exciting young stallion Temple City – out of the graded stakes performing Unbridled’s Song mare, Brisquette, also dam of the graded stakes winning juvenile sprinter, Garden District.

Medal Count is out of a mare from the Fappiano branch of the Mr. Prospector line, but Mr. Prospector is back in the fifth generation of the pedigree here, and crossing Medal Count back over mares from the Mr. Prospector line should work well, especially since Dynaformer and his sons have already sired more than 30 stakes winners on this cross. Six of these, three grade one, are out of mares by Seeking the Gold (sire of Mutakddim, Petionville, CapeTown, Jazil and Bob and John).  Bred on the same cross as Seeking the Gold are Miswaki (broodmare sire of a Dynaformer grade one winner, and sire of Black Tie Affair), Woodman (broodmare sire of a Dynaformer line stakes winner) and Mining (broodmare sire of a Dynaformer grade one winner). The cross of Dynaformer with a mare by Carson City produced Kentucky Derby hero Barbaro, and Carson City can be introduced through City Zip – the broodmare sire of a Dynaformer line stakes winner – Cuvee, Lord Carson, Good and Tough and Five Star Day. The cross of Dynaformer over mares by Kingmambo (sire of Lemon Drop Kid) has produced two grade one winners, and other grade one producing crosses are those with mares by Gone West (who could be brought in through Mr. Greeley, Elusive Quality, Speightstown, Grand Slam, and Proud Citizen) and Thunder Gulch. Dynaformer has a stakes winner out of mare by Conquistador Cielo, and his son, Temple City has stakes winners out of mares by Conquistador Cielo line stallions Wagon Limit and Artax (by Marquetry). It might also be worth experimenting crossing Medal Count back over mares descending from Mr. Prospector via Fappiano sons Rubiano, Quiet American and Pentelicus.

Alydar like Mr. Prospector is a son of Raise a Native, and is also similarly-bred to Roberto on the distaff side of the pedigree. Dynaformer has stakes winners out of mares by Alydar sons Turkoman and Alysheba, and Alydar might also be brought in through Saratoga Six, Strike the Gold, Criminal Type, Easy Goer, Benchmark and Jeblar.

Dynaformer has also enjoyed great success when bred to mares from the Northern Dancer line. From this male line, Dynaformer has sired grade one winners out of mares by Storm Bird and his son, Storm Cat (who might be interesting through Storm Cat/Mr.Prospector crosses such as Tale of the Cat, Sea of Secrets, Storm Boot, High Yield and Pure Prize, through Forest Wildcat, Giant’s Causeway, Forestry (broodmare sire of a stakes performer by Temple City), Tabasco Cat and Mountain Cat, as well as Stormy Atlantic, Stormin Fever, Bernstein, and Sir Cat). There is a grade one winner by Dynaformer out of a mare by Zilzal, a son of Nureyev, and Nureyev might also be brought in through Theatrical, Stravinsky and Alwuhush. Roberto combines very well with Northern Dancer through Dixieland Band, who has worked under Dynaformer, and could be brought in through such as Dixie Union, Dixie Brass, Citidancer, Dixieland Heat and Chimes Band. Another branch of Northern Dancer to find a strong affinity for Roberto, including Dynaformer, is Nijinsky II, who could be sourced through Strawberry Road, Royal Academy (broodmare sire of a Dynaformer graded stakes winner), Sky Classic, Seattle Dancer and Green Dancer (and his son Greinton). In addition there are Dynaformer stakes winners out of mares descending from Northern Dancer through Sadler’s Wells (sire of El Prado, and grandsire of Kitten’s Joy, and Artie Schiller, Medaglia d’Oro); Danzig and his son Danehill (with Danzig also available through Exchange Rate, Hard Spun, Belong to Me, War Front, War Chant, Langfuhr, Dayjur, Honor Grades and Polish Numbers), El Gran Senor (sire of Lit de Justice and Helmsman); Lyphard (including a classic winner out of a mare by Linamix); and Sovereign Dancer (sire of Louis Quatorze).

Icecapade is a three-quarters relative to Northern Dancer, and Dynaformer has stakes winners from this line out of mares by Clever Trick (sire of Phone Trick), and Wild Again, who would be particularly interesting through Offlee Wild (out of a half-sister to Dynaformer), and could also be brought in through such as Wild Event, Wild Rush, Whiskey Wisdom, Vicar and Milwaukee Brew.

Dynaformer has shown a marked affinity for mares from the Blushing Groom line with champion Americain out of a mare by Arazi, and three stakes winners out of daughters of Rahy. There are also two stakes winners by Roberto line stallions out of mares by Mt. Livermore (sire of Housebuster, Peaks and Valleys and Orientate), and it could also be worth considering mares descending from Blushing Groom through Runaway Groom (sire of Cherokee Run).

Dynaformer has sired grade one winners out of mares by the In Reality sons Relaunch and Valid Appeal. Relaunch sources including Skywalker, Honour and Glory, Slew Gin Fizz, Cee’s Tizzy, Bertrando, Officer, Put it Back and Tiznow, while among the sons of Valid Appeal are Successful Appeal, Valid Expectations and Valid Wager.

Dynaformer has a graded stakes winner out of a mare by Seattle Slew, a grade one winner out of a mare by Pulpit (sire of Tapit and Sky Mesa), by the Seattle Slew son, A.P. Indy (also sire of Bernardini – who could be particularly interesting here – Malibu Moon, Mineshaft, Congrats, Flatter, Old Trieste, Stephen Got Even and Jump Start), and a graded stakes winner out of mare by Seattle Slew son, Wiliamstown (a three-quarters brother to Capote, the sire of Boston Harbor). Dynaformer’s son, Temple City, is sire of stakes winning and grade one placed Bolo out of a mare by Seattle Slew son, Chief Seattle.

We can also note that Dynaformer has done very well with mares descending from Sharpen Up, with grade one winners Dynaforce and Lucarno out of mares by Diesis. Other good crosses for Dynaformer have been Lord at War and Naskra (who can be found through Star de Naskra, Nasty and Bold and Olympia).

"Medal Count is as good of a horse as I've brought into the (Kentucky) Derby... He’s a son of Dynaformer, so going to stud, he could do a lot for the breed, especially one that can run on dirt. "
