Alan Porter Breeding Analysis for My Pal Charlie
A Super Derby victor and an earner of over $750,000, My Pal Charlie is one of the most talented sons of the exceptional sire, Indian Charlie. He is also a brother to graded winner, and grade one sire Bwana Charlie.
Indian Charlie enjoyed a remarkable degree of success with a very wide variety of Mr. Prospector line mares. His multiple Eclipse Award winning Champion Indian Blessing is out of a mare by Flying Chevron (by Carson City, who is also broodmare sire of a stakes winner by Indian Charlie, and can be brought through City Zip, Lord Carson, Good and Tough, Cuvee, Pollard’s Vison and Five Star Day). Indian Charlie's Champion Fleet Indian is out of a mare by Afleet, and his graded stakes winner Adios Charlie out of a mare by Northern Afleet (sire of Afleet Alex). From the Fappiano branch of Mr. Prospector, Indian Charlie is sire of grade one winner Liaison (dam by Cryptoclearance), graded winners out of mares by Unbridled’s Song and Quiet American, and two stakes winners out of mares by Unbridled’s Song. Other Fappiano sources, include Even the Score, Rockport Harbor, Eurosilver, Songandaprayer and Werblin, all by Unbridled’s Song – Empire Maker, Broken Vow, Grindstone, Birdstone, Red Bullet, Rubiano, Candy Ride, Cahill Road, Pentelicus and Tasso. There are also Indian Charlie stakes winners out of Mr. Prospector line stallions, Silver Ghost, Crafty Prospector, Tank’s Prospect, Conquistador Cielo (sire of Marquetry and grandsire of Artax), Fortunate Prospect, Gulch (sire of Thunder Gulch), Black Tie Affair and Smart Strike.
Indian Charlie has also enjoyed considerable success with mares from the Northern Dancer. He has proved to be very well-suited by mares from the Vice Regent/Deputy Minister line, including graded winner Indian Firewater out of a mare by Touch Gold, and stakes winners out of mares by Deputy Minister and Domasca Dan. The Deputy Minister line can also be brought in through Dehere, Silver Deputy, Awesome Again, Salt Lake, French Deputy, Forest Camp, Graeme Hall, Posse and Deputy Commander. Indian Charlie also has two stakes winners out of mares by Dixieland Band (sire of Dixie Union, Dixie Brass, Dixieland Heat, Chimes Band, Citidancer and Hook and Ladder). From the Danzig branch of Northern Dancer, Indian Charlie is sire of stakes winners out of mares by Pine Bluff and Ghazi (by Polish Navy), and could also work over daughters of such as Belong to Me, Langfuhr, Boundary, Chief’s Crown, Concerto, Danzig Connection, Exchage Rate, Honor Grades, Lost Soldier, War Front, War Chant, Danzig Connection and Katowice.
My Pal Charlie’s brother Bwana Charlie is sire of a grade one winner out of a mare by Stormy Atlantic, from the Storm Cat branch of Northern Dancer. This also suggests trying mares by Stormin Fever, Tale of the Cat, Storm Boot, Storm Creek, Sea of Secrets, Forest Wildcat (D’Wildcat or Wildcat Heir), Forestry, Giant’s Causeway, Hennessy and his son Johannesburg, Harlan’s Holiday, Bernstein, Mountain Cat, Tabasco Cat, Sir Cat, Freud, High Yield, Tactical Cat and Tabasco Cat. From the Storm Bird line, Indian Charlie also has a stakes winner out of a mare by Hermitage, and it could also be worth trying mares by Storm Bird son Summer Squall. In Excess, the sire of Indian Charlie, was responsible for a classic winner out of a mare by Northern Dancer son, Sadler’s Wells, who could be brought in through El Prado (sire of Medaglia d’Oro, Kitten’s Joy and Artie Schiller). Indian Charlie also has a stakes winner out of mare by the Niinsky II line sire, Strawberry Road, and other Nijinsky II line broodmare sires include Royal Academy and Sky Classic.
Indian Charlie and his sons have sired three stakes winners out of Seattle Slew line mares from daughters of Boston Harbor (by Capote), Slewacide and Seattle Song, as well as a grade one performer out of a mare by A.P. Indy Like many branches of Mr. Prospector, Forty Niner and his sons have enjoyed success when crossed with Seattle Slew line mares. In addition to Seattle Slew himself, representatives of this line that have sired the dams of stakes winners by Forty Niner line stallions include A.P. Indy (who could be brought in through Pulpit, Malibu Moon, Mineshaft, Golden Missile, Old Trieste, Stephen Got Even, Congrats, Flatter, Tapit, and Sky Mesa and Jump Start), Williamstown), Slewpy, Slew o’Gold, Houston, Avenue of Flags and Slew City Slew. Seattle Slew is a grandson of Boldnesian, and from the Bold Ruckus branch of that line, there is a stakes winner by Indian Charlie out of a mare by Bold Revenue and the line could also be brought In through Brief Ruckus.
Indian Charlie’s brilliant Champion Two-Year-Old Uncle Mo is out of a mare by Arch, a son of Kris S. (also sire of Prized and You and I), from the Roberto branch of Hail to Reason. Other Roberto line stallions include Lear Fan, Dynaformer, Silver Hawk and Red Ransom. My Pal Charlie is out of a mare by Halo, another son of Hail to Reason, and it could be worth inbreeding to Halo through such as Saint Ballado (sire of Saint Liam, Sweetsouthernsaint, Yankee Victor and Run Production), Devil’s Bag (sire of Devil His Due, Diable and Bag), Jolie’s Halo, Halo’s Image and Southern Halo and More Than Ready. It would also be worth considering bringing in the Stop the Music branch of Hail to Reason – a good combination for Halo – and available through Cure the Blues (sire of American Chance and Tethra) and Temperence Hill.
We can also note that My Pal Charlie is half-brother to graded stakes winner by Holy Bull (sire of Macho Uno), who is also sire of the dam of an Indian Charlie graded stakes winner, and has a stakes winner out of a mare by Time For A Change (sire of Fly So Free and Time Bandit), a horse bred on similar lines to Gilded Time.
