Alan Porter Analysis for Shakin It Up
Shakin It Up is a grade one winning sprinter, and multiple graded stakes winner who carried his speed to a mile-and-a-sixteenth in graded company. He’s by Champion Midnight Lute, the only two-time winner of the Breeders’ Cup Sprint, and now a highly-successful young sire, out of a daughter of world highweighted filly, Silverbulletday.
The Storm Cat line might work well here. Shakin It Up’s graded stakes winning three-quarters brother Govenor Charlie is by Midnight Lute out of a Storm Cat half-sister to the dam of Shakin It Up. Among the sons of Storm Cat that have produced stakes winners for Fappiano line stallions are Forest Wildcat (sire of Wildcat Heir and D’Wildcat), Cat Thief, Forestry (who appeals here), Giant’s Causeway (a brother Freud), Hennessy and his son Johannesburg, Menifee (by Harlan, also sire of Harlan’s Holiday), Tabasco Cat, Storm Creek, Sea of Secrets and Catienus, and other sources include Tale of The Cat (sire of Lion Heart), Stormy Atlantic and Stormin Fever (who both give inbreeding to Seattle Slew), Storm Boot, Bernstein, Mountain Cat, Sir Cat, High Yield and Tactical Cat. Storm Cat is a son of Storm Bird, and Midnight Lute already has a stakes performer out of a mare by Charismatic, who is by Storm Bird son, Summer Squall.
Midnight Lute’s dual grade one winner, Midnight Lucky, is out of a mare by Citidancer, who is by the Northern Dancer stallion, Dixieland Band. It would also be possible to try mares by Dixie Union, Chimes Band, Dixie Brass, Dixieland Brass, Dixieland Heat, Hook and Ladder, Jambalaya Jazz and Kentucky Jazz.
Midnight Lute is a grandson of Quiet American, and his sire line has also enjoyed success with Northern Dancer through Danzig, including through Chief’s Crown (who gives a parallel Northern Dancer/Secretariat cross to Dehere who is in the pedigree of Midnight Lute), the sire of Concerto. Other Danzig sources include War Front (who looks particularly interesting), Langfuhr, Polish Numbers, War Chant, Pine Bluff, Belong to Me, Boundary, Danzig Connection, Exchange Rate, Honor Grades, Lost Soldier (another Northern Dancer/Secretariat cross), Katowice and Ghazi.
Quiet American crossed successfully with Nureyev, with three graded stakes winners, including a grade one winner out of a mare by Atticus (a Northern Dancer/Secretariat cross), with other Nureyev sources including Theatrical, Stravinsky, Spinning World, Alwuhush, Fasliyev and Zilzal. Quiet American and his sons have also benefitted from Northern Dancer through El Gran Senor (sire of Lit de Justice) and his brother, Try My Best (sire of Last Tycoon).
Stallions frequently do well when crossed back over their broodmare sire line, and Shakin It Up is out of mare by a son of Seattle Slew. This suggests that he may do well when crossed back over Seattle Slew line mares, and we can note that Midnight Lute already has a stakes winner out of a mare by A.P. Indy. It might pay to introduce A.P. Indy through Pulpit (an extended reverse cross to Shakin It Up, and sire of Tapit – who is bred on a reverse cross to Shakin It Up – Sky Mesa, Stroll), Bernardini (who is bred on a reverse cross to Shakin It Up), Malibu Moon, Mineshaft, Congrats and Flatter – all extended reverse crosses to Shakin It Up – Golden Missile, Jump Start, Majestic Warrior, Friends Lake, Aptitude, Old Trieste (sire of Silver Train) and Stephen Got Even. Other Seattle Slew line potential broodmare sires include Boston Harbor, Doneraile Court, General Meeting, Seattle Song, Septieme Ciel, Slew City Slew, Slew o’ Gold, Slewpy and Tsunami Slew.
Midnight Lute’s first crop Queen’s Plate winner, Midnight Aria, is out of a mare by a son of Mr. Prospector. We can note that Midnight Lute’s grandsire, Quiet American, has also reacted positively to combining with certain other strains of Mr. Prospector, among them Carson City (sire of such as City Zip, Lord Carson, Good and Tough, Five Star Day and Cuvee), Seeking the Gold (sire of Petionville, Mutakddim – an extended reverse cross to Shakin It Up – Petionville and Cape Town), Afleet (sire of Northern Afleet, and grandsire of Afleet Alex), Gone West (sire of Grand Slam, Elusive Quality, Mr. Greeley, Speightstown - who brings in Storm Cat – and Proud Citizen), Conquistador Cielo (sire of Marquetry – who is broodmare sire of a stakes winner by Midnight Lute’s sire, Real Quiet – and grandsire of Artax), Smart Strike (who is also sire of the second dam of a Midnight Lute stakes winner, and whose son, Curlin, could be interesting), Forty Niner (sire of Distorted Humor, Coronado’s Quest, Editor’s Note, End Sweep, Twining, Tactical Advantage, Roar, and grandsire of Trippi, Flower Alley and Sharp Humor) and Pioneering (a half-brother to Storm Cat).
It would also be interesting to try Shakin It Up over mares from his own Fappiano line, through genetic relatives to Quiet American. Midnight Lute has already sired two-year-old stakes winner Midnight Ballet out of a mare by Unbridled’s Song, sire of Rockport Harbor, Songandaprayer, Old Fashioned, Even the Score, Half Ours and Dunkirk (a reverse cross to Shakin It Up. Unbridled’s Song is a son of Unbridled, who might also be brought in through Birdstone, Broken Vow, Empire Maker, Red Bullet and Spanish Steps (a brother to Unbridled’s Song) . Fappiano might also be introduced through Rubiano.
Midnight Lute’s graded stakes winning and grade one placed daughter, Tiz Midnight, is out of a mare by Tiznow, by the Relaunch line stallion, Cee’s Tizzy, suggesting such as Honour and Glory, Officer, Skywalker and Bertrando. From the same In Reality line as Tiznow, Midnight Lute’s classic placed son, My Lute, is out of a mare by Valid Expectations, a son of Valid Appeal, also sire of Successful Appeal (sire of Closing Argument) and Valid Wager. Midnight Lute’s stakes winning and graded stakes placed runner, Holy Lute, is out of a mare by Holy Bull, and his graded stakes winner Midnight Hawk is out of a mare by Wolf Power. Housebuster (by Mt. Livermore, also sire of Orientate) is broodmare sire of a stakes performer for Midnight Lute, and a graded stakes winner by Quiet American.
