Alan Porter Breeding Analysis for Temple City

A very versatile and talented performer, Temple City also owns true stallion pedigree. A graded winner, and beaten only inches for grade one honors, Temple City won from 6½ furlongs – off a 1:08.4 three-quarters – to 1½ miles – a dominating graded victory over grade one winner Unusual Suspect. He is by the outstanding sire, Dynaformer – also an impressive turf scorer over 1½ miles – and his dam is a half-sister to the red hot stallion Malibu Moon, and out of a grade one winning two-year-old.

Dynaformer is a son of Roberto, a horse whose dam is closely related to the dam of Mr. Prospector, and Dynaformer has developed a strong affinity for Mr. Prospector line mares, this cross providing six of his grade one winners. Among the branches of Mr. Prospector that have produced notable winners for Dynaformer are Gone West (who could be brought in through Mr. Greeley, Elusive Quality, Speightstown, Grand Slam, and Proud Citizen), Seeking the Gold (sire of Mutakddim, Petionville and CapeTown), Kingmambo (sire of Lemon Drop Kid), Carson City (sire of City Zip, Cuvee, Lord Carson, Good and Tough and Five Star Day), Woodman, Thunder Gulch (by Gulch) and Conquistador Cielo (sire of Marquetry).

Alydar like Mr. Prospector is a son of Raise a Native, and again similarly-bred to Roberto on the distaff side of the pedigree. Dynaformer has stakes winners out of mares by Alydar sons Turkoman and Alysheba, and Alydar might also be brought in through Saratoga Six, Strike the Gold, Criminal Type, Easy Goer, Benchmark (giving a well-placed Danzig double) and Jeblar.

Dynaformer has also enjoyed great success when bred to mares from the Northern Dancer line (Temple City is out of a Northern Dancer line mare, but crossing a stallion over mares from his own broodmare sire line often works well). From this male line, Dynaformer has sired grade one winners out of mares by Storm Bird and his son, Storm Cat (who might be interesting through Storm Cat/Mr.Prospector crosses such as Tale of the Cat, Sea of Secrets, Storm Boot, High Yield and Pure Prize, through Forest Wildcat, Giant’s Causeway, Forestry, Tabasco Cat and Mountain Cat, as well as Stormy Atlantic, Stormin Fever, Bernstein, and Sir Cat). There is a grade one winner by Dynaformer out of a mare by Zilazal, a son of Nureyev, and Nureyev might also be brought in through Theatrical, Stravinsky and Alwuhush. Roberto combines very well with Northern Dancer through Dixieland Band, who has worked under Dynaformer, and could be brought in through such as Dixie Union, Dixie Brass, Citidancer, Dixieland Heat and Chimes Band. Another branch of Northern Dancer to find a strong affinity for Roberto, including Dynaformer, is Nijinsky II, who could be sourced through Strawberry Road, Royal Academy, Sky Classic, Seattle Dancer and Green Dancer (and his son Greinton). It could also pay to try mares carrying Nijinsky II’s three-parts-brother, The Minstrel. In addition there are Dynaformer stakes winners out of mares descending from Northern Dancer through Sadler’s Wells (sire of El Prado, Kitten’s Joy, and Artie Schiller, and grandsire of Medaglia d’Oro), El Gran Senor (sire of Lit de Justice and Helmsman), Lyphard (including a classic winner out of a mare by Linamix) and Sovereign Dancer (sire of Louis Quatorze).

Icecapade is a three-quarters relative to Northern Dancer, and Dynaformer has stakes winners for this line out of mares by Clever Trick (sire of Phone Trick), and Wild Again, who would be particularly interesting through Offlee Wild (out of a half-sister to Dynaformer), and could also be brought in through such as Wild Event, Wild Rush, Whiskey Wisdom, Vicar and Milwaukee Brew.

The Blushing Groom line is showing a marked affinity for Dynaformer, with grade one winner Americain out of a mare by Arazi, and three stakes winners out of daughters of Rahy. There are also two stakes winners by Roberto line stallions out of mares by Mt. Livermore (sire of Housebuster, Peaks and Valleys and Orientate), and it could also be worth considering mares descending from Blushing Groom through Runaway Groom (sire of Cherokee Run).

Dynaformer has sired grade one winners out of mares by the In Reality sons Relaunch and Valid Appeal. Relaunch sources including Skywalker, Honour and Glory, Slew Gin Fizz, Cee’s Tizzy, Bertrando, Officer, Put it Back and Tiznow, while among the sons of Valid Appeal  are Successful Appeal, Valid Expectations and Valid Wager.

We can also note that Dynaformer and Danzig – the sire and broodmare sire of Temple City – have done very well with mares descending from Sharpen Up, with Dynaformer particularly liking Diesis, while other good crosses for Dynaformer have been Lord at War and Naskra (who can be found through Star de Naskra, Nasty and Bold and Olympia.
