Alan Porter Breeding Analysis for Tiz Wonderful
Tiz Wonderful is an outstanding, undefeated juvenile, by major stallion force Tiznow. A 12½ lengths winner at Saratoga on his debut, Tiz Wonderful captured the Iroquois Stakes by 6¾ lengths, and completed his juvenile campaign by defeating grade one winners Any Given Saturday and Dominican in the Kentucky Jockey Club Stakes (G2). Tiz Wonderful’s sire, Tiznow was a Horse of the Year and the only two-time winner of the Breeders’ Cup Classic (G1). Leading Freshman Sire, Tiznow first three crops have already produced Champion Two-Year-Old Filly Folklore, classic winner Da’Tara, and other grade one winners Colonel John, Tough Tiz’s Sis and Well Armed.
Tiz Wonderful is out of a mare by Hennessy a son of Storm Cat, from the Northern Dancer line. Storm Cat is a genetic relative to Tiznow’s granddam, Lonely Dancer, and it could be worth considering crossing Tiz Wonderful back over mares from the Storm Cat line. Tiz Wonderful’s dam is a Storm Cat/Mr. Prospector cross, so it could we worth emulating that through Tale of the Cat, Storm Boot, Storm Creek or Sea of Secrets, or though other Storm Cat/Raise a Native crosses such as Forest Wildcat or Cat Thief. Mares by Forestry would give linebreeding to the dam of Mr. Prospector and a three-parts-sister. Stormy Atlantic or Stormin Fever, giving a double of Seattle Slew, should also be interesting, and Tiznow has a multiple graded stakes winner out of a mare by Tabasco Cat. In addition, Tiznow has also sired stakes winners out of Northern Dancer line mares by Dixie Brass (by Dixieland Band), and Salt Lake and Dehere (both by Deputy Minister). Dixieland Band would also be attractive through Dixie Union, and among the appealing sources of Deputy Minister are Awesome Again and Touch Gold . It should also be worth trying Tiz Wonderful with mares bred on the Northern Dancer/Mr. Prospector cross, or by mares sired by stallions bred on that cross, such as Dayjur (broodmare sire of Tiznow’s grade one winner Tizway).
Out of mares from the Mr. Prospector line Tiznow has sired 2012 classic prospect, Gemologist, out of a mare by Mr. Prospector. He has three stakes winners out of mares from the Gone West branch, suggesting testing Tiz Wonderful with mares by such asElusive Quality, Grand Slam, Mr. Greeley, Speightstown, and Proud Citizen. Tiznow’s grade one winner Bullsbay is out of a mare by Lord Carson, and Tiznow also has a stakes winner out of that horse’s sire, Carson City (which suggests trying daughters of Cuvee and City Zip). Tiznow is sire of stakes winners out of mares by Woodman and Seeking the Gold (sire of Petionville, Mutakddim and Cape Town), who are both products of the Mr. Prospector/Buckpasser cross, which is also found in Miswaki. Considering the Fappiano branch of Mr. Prospector, we can note that Tiznow has a graded stakes winner by Pentelicus, and that the second dam of his Champion Two-Year-Old Filly Folklore was by Fappiano himself. This suggests trying mares descending from Fappiano through Unbridled (sire of Unbridled’s Song, who would give a double of the dam of Tiznow’s broodmare sire, Seattle Song, and Broken Vow) and Cahill Road – both three-parts-brothers to Pentelicus – Rubiano (whose granddam is a sister to Relaunch, the grandsire of Tiznow) and Quiet American. Another Fappiano son, Cryptoclearance (sire of Victory Gallop), is a Mr. Prospector/Tom Rolfe cross, like the granddam of Tiz Wonderful. Another similarly-bred Mr. Prospector line horse is Forty Niner (who has numerous sons who could be brought in as broodmare sires, among them Distorted Humor).
Tiz Wonderful might also benefit from mares by stallions bred on a Mr. Prospector/Northern Dancer cross, which in addition to some of those mentioned above, include Thunder Gulch (giving inbreeding to Storm Bird), Fusaichi Pegasus, Kingmambo, Northern Afleet, and Marquetry. Crafty Prospector, a genetic relative to the dam of Tiz Wonderful’s male line ancestor, Relaunch, might also work well. We can note that Tiznow has also sired stakes winners out of mares descending from Mr. Prospector’s sire, Raise a Native, through Alydar (out of a mare by Turkoman), and this line might also do well through Saratoga Six) and Majestic Prince.
Tiznow is out of a mare by a son of Seattle Slew, but has worked well with mares giving a duplication of that strain, siring grade one winner Morning Line out of a mare by A.P Indy, and two stakes winners, including graded scorer Slew’s Tizzy out of a mare by Slewpy. The A.P. Indy line could be brought in through Pulpit (sire of Sky Mesa and Tapit, who brings in a sister to Tiznow’s grandsire, Relaunch), Malibu Moon, Mineshaft, Old Trieste, Stephen Got Even, and Jump Start. Other Seattle Slew sources include Capote (sire of a stakes winning half-sister to Tizway, and available through Boston Harbor, and Matty G), Vindication, Slew o’Gold, Septieme Ciel and Doneraile Court. Seattle Slew is a Bold Ruler (by Nasrullah) line horse, and Tiznow is also sire of Dubai World Cup winner Well Armed, who is out of a mare by Notebook (from the Raja Baba branch of Bold Ruler) and with a second dam by a son of Seattle Slew. From the Caro branch of the Nasrullah line comes graded winner Bear Now (out of a mare by In Excess, the sire of Indian Charlie). Bold Ruler though Secretariat also appears to be a strain that works very well with Tiznow.
Tiznow is an In Reality line sire, but is responsible for grade one winner Tough Tiz’s Sister out of a mare by In Reality son Taylor’s Falls. He might also work over mares from the Valid Appeal branch of In Reality. Tiznow’s sire, Cee's Tizzy, is sire of a stakes winner out of a mare by Great Above (who is bred on the reverse cross to In Reality). Great Above can also be brought in as the sire of Holy Bull and the broodmare sire of Housebuster. It would also be worth considering Housebuster’s sire, Mt. Livermore. He is a son of Blushing Groom, and Tiznow also has a grade one performer out of a mare by Blushing Groom son Rahy.
Like most In Reality line sires, Relaunch has done well over, Turn-to, this cross producing more than 30 stakes winners. Good sources are Roberto (whose son, Kris S. is broodmare sire of Tiznow’s juvenile graded winner Tizahit), Halo (who would be particularly good through Saint Ballado and Devil’s Bag), Drone, Mr. Leader, Cyane and his son Smarten, Lord Gaylord and his son Lord Avie.
