Alan Porter analysis for Wicked Strong

A grade one winner of almost $2,000,000, Wicked Strong is the highest-earning stallion son of Danzig’s record-breaking stallion son, Hard Spun, from an excellent Fred Hooper family.

Wicked Strong is out of a mare by a son of Summer Squall, and that would make him intriguing with mares descending from that horse’s three-quarters relative Storm Cat. We can note that Hard Spun has multiple grade one winner Hard Not to Like out of a mare by Tactical Cat and a stakes winner out of a mare by Forest Wildcat. The successful cross of Danzig line stallions with Sadler’s Wells line mares is worth trying here with mares by El Prado and his sons, and Wicked Strong should also do well with Deputy Minister line mares.

Hard Spun has already established a very strong relationship with Mr. Prospector line mares. There are three stakes winners by Hard Spun out of mares by Mr. Prospector himself. Hard Spun’s Champion Three-Year-Old Filly Questing is out of a mare by Seeking the Gold. He has stakes winners out of mares by Gone West and his sons Mr. Greeley and Elusive Quality. From the Forty Niner branch comes graded scorer Island Town, out of a mare by Distorted Humor. The Fappiano branch of Mr. Prospector has been particularly good here, with grade one winners out of mares by Quiet American and Unbridled, a graded winner out of a mare by Empire Maker, and a stakes winner out of a mare by Unbridled’s Song. There are also Hard Spun stakes winners out of mares descending from Mr. Prospector through Carson City, Miswaki, Kingmambo (who would be interesting through Lemon Drop Kid) and Fusaichi Pegasus. Mr. Prospector is a son of Raise a Native, and from another branch of that line, Hard Spun has a stakes winner out of a mare by Alydar son, Strike the Gold.

Any mare carrying A.P. Indy will give a duplication of his dam, the exceptional broodmare, Weekend Surprise, and Hard Spun already has three stakes winners, one a group winner, out of mares by that sire, as well as a stakes winner out of a mare by Doneraile Court – who would be especially interesting here – and who, like A.P. Indy, is a son of Seattle Slew.

From the Blushing Goom line, Hard Spun has a grade one winner out of a mare by Housebuster, and a stakes winner out of a mare by his sire, Mt. Livermore, and graded winner out of a mare by Rahy. He also has a grade one winner out of a mare by Cozzene, and from the Roberto line, stakes winners out of mares by Dynaformer and Roberto.

(Wicked Strong) was now ready to return to his form from last year’s Remsen Stakes, in which he flew home in :11 2/5 and was just getting revved up in the final yards. In the Wood, he exhibited that same explosive closing kick and saw his Beyer figure soar to a 104. — Steve Haskin Alan Porter Breeding Analysis for Wicked Strong (click for more)
