Cone of Light radiant in career debut

Thursday, April 18, 2013
Tiz Wonderful added to his impressive list of sophomore winners Thursday at Keeneland when Cone of Light came from the back of the pack to win his debut in a 6 1/2-furlong maiden special weight contest for 3-year-olds. View the race replay here (select April 18, race 7).

Tiz Wonderful has 15 winners to date this year, fourth-best among all second-crop sires.

Breaking from post 10, Cone of Light took that position down the backstretch under Robby Albarado. Still ninth after a half-mile, Albarado guided the long-striding dark bay out around a wall of horses at the top of the stretch.

In the clear with a furlong to run, Cone of Light accelerated quickly to hit the front inside the final sixteenth, drawing clear to win by 2 1/4-lengths in 1:18.45.

Bred by Spendthrift Farm, Cone of Light is owned by Gary Biszantz and Gary Vanderweghe, who bought him as a weanling at the 2010 Keeneland November sale. Cone of Light is a half-brother to Zultanite, who placed in both the 2012 Sands Point S. (G2) and Boiling Spring S. (G3).
