Rule by Night turned the $60,000 Groovy S. into a one-horse race with a galloping 9 1/4-length victory at Aqueduct on Nov. 20. The Groovy was the first career stakes win for the 3-year-old Malibu Moon colt, who flashed the talent that could make him one of the top sprinters of 2011.
Rule by Night showed an amazing turn of foot in the seven furlong Groovy. Sitting in second through a half-mile in a very fast :44.67, Rule by Night cruised to the front without urging from Ramon Dominguez. Given his cue at the top of the stretch, the chestnut colt ran away from the field to stop the clock in a stellar 1:20.67. The 107 Beyer Speed Figure is one of the best sprint times of 2010.
Trained by Steve Asmussen, Rule by Night is now 4-2-0 in eight career starts. He has earned $194,900 for owner Gold Square Farm. The winner was bred in Kentucky by Sierra Farm. He is one of three winners out of Silver Reserve, who is a half-sister to the Grade 2-winning sprinter Boone's Mill.
Malibu Moon is North America's third leading sire of 2010 with nearly $8 million in progeny earnings. He is also the only sire with three Grade 1 winners on the dirt.
