With entries set for the Nov. 2-3 Breeders' Cup, top-10 sire Malibu Moon has three starters set to give their sire another milestone in his stallion career.
On Friday, Kauai Katie runs in the Grade 1 Juvenile Fillies (G1) and Moonwalk goes postward in the Grade 1 Juvenile Fillies Turf. The following day, Strike the Moon carries the torch for her sire in the Grade 1 Filly and Mare Sprint.
Kauai Katie drew the outside post in the field of eight in the $2 million Juvenile Fillies. The bay filly has been nothing short of spectacular in her three starts. After a crushing maidens by 12 lengths at Saratoga on July 20, she came back on Aug. 12 to capture the Adirondack S. (G2) also at Saratoga, by 2 3/4-lengths. The Sept. 30 Matron S. (G2) also proved no obstacle for the Spendthrift Farm bred as she cruised home a 7 1/2-length winner.
Kauai Katie, trained by Todd Pletcher, is 3-1 on the morning line and will be ridden once again by Rosie Napravnik.
Spendthrift Farm homebred Moonwalk will be put to the test in a full field of 14 in the $1 million Juvenile Fillies Turf. The dark bay filly is a proven commodity on the grass, winning the Grade 3 Jessamine S. over the Keeneland lawn on Oct. 6. Corie Lanerie, who was aboard for that victory, will be in the irons once again when his filly breaks from post 11 on Friday.
On Saturday, Strike the Moon faces a strong field in the $1 million Filly and Mare Sprint at seven furlongs. The bay 4-year-old punched her ticket to Santa Anita with a good second to prohibitive Sprint favorite Groupie Doll in the Thoroughbred Club of America S. (G2) at Keeneland on Oct. 6. Jose Lezcano, who rode at Keeneland, has the return call.
