Multiple G2 winner Dominus sires first winner from first starter

Wednesday, June 8, 2016
Spendthrift Farm freshman sire Dominus, the multiple Grade 2-winning son of Smart Strike, sired his first winner from his first starter on Wednesday, when 2-year-old filly P Boo was an impressive 4 1/4-length wire-to-wire winner at first asking in a $28,000 Maiden Special Weight race at Evangeline Downs.

Owned and trained by Jerry Delhomme, the gray filly broke alertly and contested the early pace into the turn of the 4 ½-furlong race. Under jockey Hector Santiago, P Boo shook clear from her rivals on the turn, opening up a decisive lead as the field moved into the stretch. Her lead widened to the wire, stopping the timer in 53.24 seconds over a fast local main track.

Bred in Louisiana by Spendthrift Farm, P Boo is out of the multiple stakes-placed Freud mare Paraiba.

On the track, Dominus impressively broke his maiden on dirt at Santa Anita in his 3-year-old debut, and was runner-up in the Derby Trial S. (G3) at Churchill in just his third start. In his next start, he scored a decisive victory in the Dwyer S. (G2) at Belmont. At 4, he won his seasonal debut by 4 ¼ lengths on dirt at Saratoga, before capturing the Bernard Baruch H. (G2) at Saratoga over Grade 1 winner Data Link in his first start on turf.

Campaigned by owners George Bolton, Stonestreet Stables & Spendthrift Farm, Dominus retired to stud with earnings of $444,717. Bred by Edward P. Evans, he hails from the multiple stakes-winning Lord At War (Arg) mare Cuando.

Dominus currently stands at Spendthrift for a fee of $3,500 stands and nurses, and is participating in Spendthrift's popular "Breed Secure" program in 2016.
