OBS March sale: Malibu Moon pair near the top

Wednesday, March 17, 2010
On the heels of the Calder sale two weeks ago, Malibu Moon continued a strong spring on the Florida 2-year-old sales circuit when a pair of juveniles by the Spendthrift stallion were among the top sellers at the OBS selected sale, which wrapped up its two-day run on Mar. 17.

Both of the horses sold on the second day of the sale. The top seller for the stallion was Hip No. 221, a chestnut filly consigned by Old South Farm which went for $370,000 to Mark Casse, agent. The final hammer price was the sixth highest of the sale. The filly is out of the stakes placed mare Perfectly Clear.

Hip No. 303, a colt by Malibu Moon, sold for $270,000 to LRK, Inc. He was consigned by Ricky Leppala, agent. The bay is out of Summit Lite, a half-sister to a multiple graded turf stakes winner Strategic Partner.

Both horses had very quick works at the under tack show held prior to the sale. Each worked an eighth-mile, with Hip No. 221 getting hers in :10 2/5 seconds, while the colt went in :10 3/5 seconds. Videos of both works are available here: Hip No. 221Hip No. 303.
