Temple City got his first multiple stakes winner of 2015 on Saturday when Papacoolpapacool strolled to a 4 ¼-length victory in the $75,000 La Puente S. at Santa Anita. The 3-year-old has won three consecutive starts, including the $80,000 Pasadena S. in his previous start.
Temple City, a top-10 Second-Crop sire of 2015, is also represented this year by Grade 1-placed Bolo, who could contend in this year’s Kentucky Derby (G1), and the graded stakes placed 3-year-old filly Miss Temple City.
In the La Puente, Papacoolpapacool stalked in fourth for most of the race with Gary Stevens biding his time along the rail. Finding a seam two-wide in upper stretch, Papacoolpapacool shot through and drew away from the field under a hand ride. He completed the 1 1/8-miles, his first time at the distance, in 1:49.47 on the firm turf.
Papacoolpapacool is a perfect 3-for-3 for his connections of Cellist Racing Group and Ali Nilforushan and trainer Phil D’Amato. Overall, he is 4-1-1 in eight starts, earning $192,750.
